This thread is based on an old thread, which I can't seem to find, but some of you might recall it.

Same rules as last thread, every song gets 24 hours of love, then first replier gets to pick the next one.

I'll start of with The Killing Hand, one of DT's best epics and their first.

GO!

Was just thinking of it now! 'tis a classic

SlitherX

Amazing song.

Would really love to hear it remade with James on vox, and a more modern sound quality.

You should probably specify a timezone. Might be helpful.

Also, great song.

The Killing Hand
personal rank: 46

Writing epics is one of Dream Theater's favorite things to do; It's no surprise to anybody that their debut album contained what would become their first epic, even though its length may not seem to suggest it. This is a story that will grab you from the start and keep you intrigued until the final plot twist. Not only that, but we're greeted to a truly-defining progressive metal style here that has never really been explored before this very album AND...this very song. Those Dream Theater clone bands that you hear received influence from this very song; have ye no doubt.

Interpretation: This is a story about a man who wakes up and finds names written on a wall. The names signify people who have died. He wishes to know why they have died, so he travels back in time and sees a cruel tyrant who is killing off these people. The man kills the tyrant and goes back in time, but now finds that his name is on the wall, signifying that he was the tyrant. While the story is set in stone, its meaning for me personally is that a man is causing pain and misery all around him, and he finally takes a step back to see what he is doing. But by this time, it's too late: he's lost everybody around him and is virtually a dead man.

Favorite part: The "The wheels race back / And scorch his mind" section

Great song. The 2002 live version is incredible, as so is the Live at the Marquee version. One of WDADU's best for sure.  :D

wilgod3p

I used to don't like that song, but now I find it very good

hefdaddy42

It's pretty good, but I don't see it as an epic.

Sent a PM to JayOctavarium, since he was first reply. If he doesn't answer, who wants to go next?

JayOctavarium

I'm here ... been caught up in stuff... well today's song is on my opinion,  the most beauitiful instrumental written.... STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS.

Yes! I think it shows some of JR's best work on TOT.

EDIT: I'll let Occasional_Madman be next, since I'm not free tomorrow.

Occasional_Madman

ToT wouldn't be the album it is without it. The main riff is one of their catchiest, IMO.

Mladen

Beautiful instrumental, some remarkable melodies, the outro is especially wonderful. My second favorite song on Train of thought, right behind This dying soul.

Best WDADU song. Without a doubt

Edit: thoguht this was still about killing hand.. sorry

ThroughHerEyesDude6

I love the transition from Vacant into SoC. SoC is such a good instrumental, and I don't understand why it gets so much hate from the haters.

Jirpo

My fave DT instrumental! Really great song with some nice riffs.

hefdaddy42

SOC is pretty good, but not my favorite instrumental.

Great idea! lol

Zydar

A great song, and one of my favourite instrumentals.

DarkLord_Lalinc

The next song we appreciate is...The Great Debate.

LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE TO SAVE LIFE

Amazing song, from my favorite DT album.

ARE YOU JUSTIFIED?!

Awesome song from my favorite DT album.  I even worked the "Are you justified in taking life to save life?" into a speech about stem cell research for a class.  It was grand.  :metal

Careful, someone might send JP an email that someone used his lyrics in an academic way.  (Too soon?  :lol sorry)

Aniland

Tool. It has made me want to like Tool so much because of that "Anarchistic moral vision" part.

Now that I think about it, what on Earth does anarchy have to do with stem cell research?

JayOctavarium

Great song :metal .... I went from obsessed to hating to loving it once again

RoeDent

LOVE this song!  :heart :heart :heart

I didn't really listen to it until I bought 6DOIT on CD (same with all the songs on Disc 1 bar TGP), but when I heard it, I loved it almost instantly. Probably my favourite song on Disc 1.  :hefdaddy

Mladen

Brilliant song, top 10 material for me. Just perfect in every single way, kinda creepy in places.  ;D

Zydar

Great great song, although it took me some time before I began to appreciate it. Can't understand why.

ThroughHerEyesDude6

SDOIT took so long to grow on me (as a whole), but once it did, TGD is easily one of my favorites off the album.

Jirpo

The middle section is clearly the best, the sample voices are nice when listening to the album as a whole but I usually skip them when just wanting a piece of "ARE YOU JUSTIFIED!!!!"

I love TGD, it's at least a top 15 song for me. It's one of those songs that seems to be in a different world compared to the rest of the disc, which it is, mainly because of the lyrics. Musically it also has its own mood and sound. Dream Theater are the masters of giving a song its own identity and setting it apart from the rest of the album, even with the same production style, similar guitar tones etc.

SOC is one of my favorite instrumentals ever. I can't say it's the greatest because I love Hell's Kitchen just as much. SOC does have one thing on it though. I learned most of the guitar parts, save the solos, and I can actually play along to it on my 7, which is quite fun.
