2 months writing? And not writing and recording at the same time? And they were working on ideas by themselves before hand? Awesome. Whatever this album is, it'll certainly be more reflected on than the past couple. Here's to hoping that the new, post-Mike relaxed studio atmosphere gives us another DT classic!

I hear you.  :metal

Hope you guys won't be disappointed when you realise they just don't have IT anymore.
Nah, what do I know.. Hopefully it's as great as SDoIT/ToT (I'm sorry, I know that a lot of DT fans dislike those albums, but they definitely are my favourites)

If they record all their instruments to a click instead of drums, that album is not going to come out sounding right.  The drums are integral to DTs sound.  I REALLY doubt they would record instruments before drums.  If the album is done, the drummer is there.
I tried this with a band once.
No matter how tight you play it, in the end it sounds strange.

Glad to hear they've taken their time on this one!  NOW ANNOUNCE THE DRUMMER ALREADY

GandL

This is what JR has just stated on his Twitt:
"Amazing. Writing stage is complete for the new DT album! It's gonna rock!!"

Plasmastrike

Wow, so the writing process is done. It's fun to think that, somewhere right now, the DT album has been conceptualized. It took them a very comfy amount of time to write this thing. Hopefully tracking and recording bring about the guys collaborating and honing their creation. Improvements, changes, experimenting with lots of sounds, good times.

Now for that darn drummers name!

I tweeted this to the guys heh:
"@Jcrudess @JPetrucci Was the new guy involved in the writing process? Here's to the future. Cheers."

My tweet :
@JPetrucci And the new drummer I am sure was huge in that process... ...what was his name again?? ;-)

Why is their a perception that Mike had this crazy, you have to do things my way or the highway attitude in the studio? I've never heard from any of the guys from DT complain about the way Mike acted in the studio. I'm sure the guys still wish Mike never quit the band in the first place.

rumborak

I think the DVD commentary where JM's suggestion was brutally shot down in front of an open mike was pretty indicative. And, obviously they wouldn't publicly denounce MP, since that's just bad for business.
At this point I think DT is happy that the chips fell where they did.

I got that impression from the behind the scenes videos of ToT and SC. Mike was more than adding his two cents. He was referencing the poster board (formulaic) plenty of times. He was relentless when giving direction and feedback to JLB when recording TDEN and several other songs.

What suggestion was that?

It wasn't a suggestion, he just said he wished they could go back to the days when they would sit and jam together without worrying about the writing and recording process. Mike said that isn't the way they do things now. Not because that wasn't how they wanted to do it, or it was his rule. Just because that is how it was at this stage in their career.

It happens everywhere, in business, relationships. etc.. A way of doing things gets developed, and once it gets comfortable, it becomes the status quo, and no one thinks "Should we re-evaluate this to see if it is still the best way of doing things?"
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

TheOutlawXanadu

However he went about doing it, I get the impression Mike always got his way, no matter what anyone else wanted. For some reason, the example that comes to mind is when JP and MP came to an agreement about what should happen in a song and signed a fake contract over it, and then Mike ended up breaking their compromise anyway. :P

Ben_Jamin

That's what's interesting. Now we get to see where JP, JM, JLB want the direction to go.

Wasn't JP who did that?

Actually, Mike was the dictator of the studio. I think he goes into explaining why in the SC bonus DVD. Not sure.

jmbeat

I'd like to believe that only good can come from this amount of time to write the next album, and actually I do.

tyranor

Very very nice news!  :metal

Hope to hear a little bit more progressive than metal. Anyway the new album must be killer - I fell it.

rumborak

BTW, I'm tentatively hopeful that the RR announcement will be about the drummer. It would make sense; they wrote the album without the drummer, and now they will bring him in for the recording, where he can still bring himself in.And they know they can't hide the drummer from this point on, not with him entering and leaving the studio all the time.

rumborak

7StringedBeast

I really hope they didn't write without the drummer.  Oh god do I hope.

valid point! altho i would like to know the drummer did had input during the writing..

^^ i also hope its going to be more in the progressive side than metal.

rumborak

@7String: Why? DT has been all about drums and guitar lately, with the keyboard parts only turned up for weedly-weedly. And Mike's drumming was rather formulaic anyway.

rumborak

Ben_Jamin

Even though they wrote the album, doesn't mean the drummer won't have any input in the songs.

Why do I wish they wrote with the new drummer?  Cause I really hope they jammed the parts out live with each other to felt the songs power in a live situation.  I want them to get grooves into their music.  I want a fresh perspective into the music.  I truly believe bands should write their songs together and play them together before anything is considered finished.  Just a few reasons.

Ben_Jamin

Or just do what Maiden did and recorded live.

Aniland

Can someone point to a source that RR is making a DT announcement? I've never heard of that.

Come back March 4th for another announcement...

Aniland

Sweet.

Hey, DragonForce has their new singer!

TheKillingHand

I really doubt that RR announcement will be anything major. Hope I'm wrong though!

Aniland

The ellipsis makes me think it has to do with the drummer. Those always mean sneaking suspense...

Fiery Winds

Keep in mind:

I&W was written before James.

SFAM was written before Jordan.

DT11 written (most likely) before *insert drummer*.

The first two are arguably the top output of Dream Theater.  Granted, I believe drums play an integral part in the structure of the songs, but I wouldn't be surprised if they change up their songs depending on how the drummer fits with the music.

The fact that it's on Blabbermouth makes me almost certain it has NOTHING to do with the drummer whatsoever.

millahh

Folks, remember that the drummer doesn't have to be physically present to participate in the writing process.  The writing for OSI is done via email attachments...

But BM reports everything. And not sure what you mean because it was on RR first.

Huh?

I fully expect the drummer announcement to come from the band -- a video and coordinated tweets / fb updates from JR, JP, and the official band accounts. That will be followed by a posting on RR.

If it's not tomorrow I think (someone said it earlier) the big news will be US tour dates.
