Guitar tones you'd LOVE to hear on DT11 (a bit different)

We've got a spec. thread going, which is badass. But as we know, things are a little boring until we get some new info. So here's something new.

I was listening to the song "Carol" by Slint. '90s math rock band. Look this song up and just listen to those first three seconds. I would love it if Petrucci used a tone like this in something. It actually sounds a bit like the beginning tone of "As I Am".

What tones would you be happy to hear?

Generally I'd like to hear less effects-laden guitar. And less distortion. I'd also love to hear Petrucci wail on a single coil guitar again a la the LITS solo

Definately a lot of chorus-y clean tones. Or maybe like a good phaser/flanger like in Deep In Heaven.

All three of these would be very welcome.

I'd like to hear some less scooped Rectifier tones, with less gain. I'd also like some fatter lead tones with less gain and a bit more low mids.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I'm sure we'll be getting top notch guitar tones in the new DT album. JP never disappoints there.  :D

ddtonfire

Actually yes, less gain and quadruple-tracked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SeventhSon

I loved his acoustic guitar tone on the intro lead in The Best of Times. Such a great sound. I hope he keeps that up (or improves it in some way).

PixelDream

My favorite lead sounds are definately the ones on Awake, and ofcourse the LITS solo. Rythm guitars are great as well on Awake, thanks to the quadruple tracking. You can't really make it out though, he played it so tight it sounds like one or two guitars at a time.

right there, although I don't imagine hearing anything like this on the new album

BRUTAL TONEZ DUDE.

In all seriousness, a mix between Awake, BC&SL, and SFAM would be cool (one can wish). :metal

I want better JR solos, JLB Static Impulse like voice and some song with clean bass sound.John Petrucci can't disappoint me ;D

This is exactly my wish. I believe one of the reasons that the bass is not so noticeable in the later records is because of the distortion that is used.

SeventhSon

I would like to hear the same sort of sounds the band had during the Falling into Infinity record. Everything just had this really fluid sort of feel to it. Between the lyrics on a few of the songs, the artwork for the record and the overall production, that record makes me think of water.

I think JP's Clapton lick would sound good in a FII tone, but I'm sure whatever tone he chose is fantastic and suits the lick well. His recent tones are quite neat, like the ones he done in the videos above ^

The Presence of Frenemies

I'd love to hear the return of some of the I & W sounding stuff, like the LTL solo tone coming out of the F# section. A wah/distortion solo like the one in Voices would also be pretty awesome--we got a taste of that in ANTR, but I want a full solo like that.

FeelThaMusik

My favorite Petrucci tones come from the Budokan show, as well as SDOIT...I feel he's been using too much gain lately, especially on his rhythm distortions.

Sigz

I actually really liked his sound on BCSL. (as far as I can remember, I haven't listened to that album in ages)

italianoman

I just want more volume swell solos/breakdowns a la TCOT!

I'd rather not see one of these, myself. One was enough...and it took me forever to warm up to TCOT because of it actually.

But maybe that's just me. I will say, though, that even if I was a fan of that part, I'd like to see DT coming up with very new ideas, rather than rehashing fairly recent ones.
