Also, I'd like to point out that I (this is entirely my opinion) think saying "choosing notes from the heart and not from a scale" is pretty smug and self important.  It says "Look at how awesome I am, I don't worry about knowing scales and such, I play what comes to me."  Bullshit.  Yes, play from your heart, by all means, it's what all guitar players aspire to do.  But in order to play from your heart and make it sound at all decent (i.e. in the right key), guess what?  You had to choose notes from a scale.

...but kerry king is on the list. JP has no chance

He didn't say knowledge was unimportant in fact he actually says 'Technique is also important' but he goes on to say how playing from your heart and not just from a technical mindset is important. In other words he's saying don't be a machine, put some feeling into your playing.

Sir GuitarCozmo

I just tend to feel all stabby inside when I hear people say stuff like that, even when they say "technique is important".  I guess I heard so many 90's dipshit guitar players make the assertion that knowing scales and being good at what you do is a bad thing that when I hear anything that even sounds like it, I get all torqued up.  :lol

Panzerschlacht

So this list includes Mikael Åkerfeldt and Kerry King but not Michael Romeo? Boo!

Yup. I do agree with this. I think Mikael is a really good guy, he's one of the most down to earth guys ever. But I think a little theory wouldn't hurt him at all.

I voted too. I really appreciate Mikael Åkerfeldt as a musician, but JP is still IMO a bit better guitarist. However, if there was a "best metal vocalist" poll, I would definitely vote for Mikael.

I think Mikael is an infinitely more interesting player than John, but John is an infinitely better player than Mikael. I hope that makes sense. :lol

Yeah. Mikael has this producer/multi-instrumentalist thing going on, wheras JP is just an extraordinaire guitar player.

What the flying fuck? The guy from Creed is up to 24%. Why the hell is the guy from Creed even on a list of Metal guitarists?
JP is at 27%.

Even his fans can't consider him the best metal guitarist ever. Better than Dime? Better than JP?

I don't think so.

Honestly, their fans are probably doing exactly what we are doing: Voting for the guy in their favorite band to be supportive.

Where is jeff loomis, chris broderick, or rusty cooley?
oh and Daron Malankian is awesome I love his work with system but in no way could he hold a candle to some of these guitarists in terms of playing ability. and imo musically (to a lesser extent)

How can this fluctuate so much so quickly? Weird.
Best guess; someone who frequents a Creed forum came across this poll.

It just had to be fucking Creed too. I mean, if Iommi or Akerfeldt or someone like that pulled ahead, it wouldn't be so insulting.

This is what made Gary Moore so great. He excelled at both...oops wrong thread! :D
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

But only we're allowed to do that!

Apparently, not only is Tremonti better than Petrucci, but he's also better than Iommi, Hetfield, Rhoads, and Dimebag Darrell. Hes up to 28% versus Petrucci's 26%.

And he deserves it too  :censored

jsem

Still surprised to see Marty Friedman with only 2%.

Because Alter Bridge did the same thing on their FB page this afternoon that is going on here.

blackngold29

I'm amazed he caught up that fast. JP was winning by like 30%. Rudess tweeted it, but we need JP to do it too.

tumbok

guess what... ::)

after you poll, clear your cookies, then refresh your page.

then... you can vote AGAIN....!

i guess this is what Alter Bridge and Creed fans doing now.

this kind of poll will never be a good way.

Hey, JP's in the lead again! 36%, with the Creed guy in 2nd at 25%.

The funny thing is that most of the comments say they didn't even vote for that guy.

Yeah, we're a bit puzzled. If it were a best Rock guitarist category, he'd surely fit. I love Tremonti, and i think he makes some of the best heavy riffs of the past decade, but I don't consider him a metal guitarist.

that, plus what the hell are mark tremonti, kerry king, tom morello, and mick thomson doing on this list?  mark and tom are not metal guitarists, kerry and mick are very shitty metal guitarists...

JP 31%
Tremonti 20%
Akerfeldt up to 10%

0% for Ammot
although i voted for Dimebag  :P

Global Laziness

Yeah, the Opeth Facebook page is encouraging fans to vote for Akerfeldt, so his jump shouldn't be surprising.
