He didn't say knowledge was unimportant in fact he actually says 'Technique is also important' but he goes on to say how playing from your heart and not just from a technical mindset is important. In other words he's saying don't be a machine, put some feeling into your playing.

I just tend to feel all stabby inside when I hear people say stuff like that, even when they say "technique is important".  I guess I heard so many 90's dipshit guitar players make the assertion that knowing scales and being good at what you do is a bad thing that when I hear anything that even sounds like it, I get all torqued up.

Yup. I do agree with this. I think Mikael is a really good guy, he's one of the most down to earth guys ever. But I think a little theory wouldn't hurt him at all.

oh and Daron Malankian is awesome I love his work with system but in no way could he hold a candle to some of these guitarists in terms of playing ability. and imo musically (to a lesser extent)

Yeah, we're a bit puzzled. If it were a best Rock guitarist category, he'd surely fit. I love Tremonti, and i think he makes some of the best heavy riffs of the past decade, but I don't consider him a metal guitarist.
