Some of you may remember that my DT tribute band (the one that's on hold now) was contributing two tracks to a DT tribute CD (Eroto and LtL). Well, progress has been sluggish because of many track cancellations from other bands (not really surprising :lol), so they contacted us again whether we could contribute a third track, bringing the CD's total up to 8, which is enough to release it then.
Well, the choice fell on DOE, and I now have 3 weeks to know this song inside-out, before we go into the studio and record it :lol
We have played the song from beginning to end as band already, but with a lot of fudging on my side at least.
This will be kind of officially the last thing the band does then. Better go out with a bang!

Damn, that's a hard thing to do Rumby! Good luck  :tup Looking forward to listen your recording.

Very nice rumborak! What will be your approach to the song? Do you think it has room to add a little bit of your own flavor to it?

rumborak

Depends on really. First I will try to get it down completely as-is; if there is enough leeway after that, I might look into adding some stuff.

My opinion on TDOE has undergone a complete 180 over the past year.

I used to hate it because it's a wank-fest. But the last time I heard it, it was stuck in my head for days. It's the catchiest wank-fest ever.

I hear you, brah. I usually find myself singing along to it, although there are like 10,000 notes to sing along to  :lol

Well, after I broke my ring finger tonight, this endeavor is certainly on hold. Gnah.

It's going to be hard, we need to see a vid when you've mastered it.
Good luck man!

Just can't understand why anyone would want to put that much time & energy to copy someone elses work.
How about spending that same time & energy seeing what's in your soul and not John Pretrucci's.

Copying a great guitarist is like following a masterclass which makes you a better guitarist in almost every way.

Because it's a gig.

Well Aquilla and Hef answered that one perfectly :)

Bill Carson

How about following your own masterclass ? Copying someone to that level will only make you play like them.
Being influenced, seeing how they do certain things........you do not need to learn a whole song & perform it back to do this.
In terms of its a gig, why put yourself in that position ? Unless it pays the bills surely you should be doing your own music.
Otherwise what's the point other than massaging your own ego....

missedthepoint

For me it's a matter of using other peoples material to discover and master new techniques.
I find the easiest way of doing this is to learn something written by some one else.
Exercises have thier place too but are somewhat disconnected and harder for me to assimilate into my own style.

I really think that, unless you have a ridiculous amount of natural talent, being your own masterclass is a very limiting way of learning as everyone has a different approach to writing. You come across ideas and techniques that maybe you would never have thought of.

Also if it pays the bills, i'm there.

To an extend, this is true.
For me however, to be able to play a whole song that's really difficult, is much more satisfactory than being able to play just pieces.
Especially when you can pull it off live, it really gives a boost to your self confidence in your playing.

Bingo. Everyone plays a cover even the big guys. Also, how else do you practice unless you play someone else's work? At least when you first start out that's almost always what you end up doing. You pick an influence and you go with that influence and you see how far it takes you. Eventually you branch out, try new things, but even the big guns still go back to their influences and play covers. I honestly don't see how any of this has to do with ego trips unless that's the way you want to see it. I guess no one can say you are wrong... oh except for the person actually doing the cover who will most ikely state otherwise. ;)

Maybe because it's a challenge and its fun? A lot of people get into playing music to emulate their heroes, yeah they want to create their own material and be known for it but even then they might just want to play something their hero has played. It can be something complex like Petrucci Dance Of Eternity or for me personally it's that solo from Comfortably Numb, for someone else it could be being able to play some simple riffs like AC/DC. I mean damn we've even seen Dream Theater do this, their bonus CD for BCSL were all cover songs, they've covered various songs in concert before from sections of Freebird to entire albums.

Also how do you know he doesn't already do his own music? He said this is part of a project and his covers band, how do you know he isn't in a band that create their own music?

Bill Carson

I'm sure he is in a band and does his own music and that his music is great.
Doing covers is very enjoyable, re-creating a very difficult technical piece is rewarding and can also increase the persons ability.
Even established bands do covers for a bit of fun and as a homage to their favourite artist.

Thank you all for making me see the error of my ways, I stand corrected.

This post is hilariously ironic, given a certain other topic in the DT section today. :lol

Exactly. It's fun music to perform and pushes oneself.
