Is Dream Theater your favorite band?

I started listening to them in 2007 I think. They instantly became my favorite band and have been for a while. Now, thanks to these forums I have discovered a lot of music and I'm not sure I can consider them my favorite band anymore, at least not the clear cut favorite. I mostly have a top 3 (Transatlantic, Dream Theater, The Dear Hunter) that can be considered my favorite depending on my mood.

They were my favourite band many years ago, but there's just too much great music that they were never likely to hold a number 1 position, and indeed I don't really think about who my favourite band is anymore. I enjoy following them more than almost any other band though, which is still sort of the case at the moment even though they haven't been as good at keeping us up to date recently.

Yes, and it was hard to move on from the ex.  Rush was my favorite since the late 70's but since the early 2000's, DT has been my numero uno.

They have been my favourite for nearly six years and now they are slowly starting to get real competiton from X-Panda and especially Haken. The coming albums from Haken and DT will make for a great competition

Absolutely, by quite a distance. Most bands I really like, I go through little spells of listening to them often and really enjoying listening to them, but eventually my interest begins to wane. That hasn't happened with DT - I still listen to them all the time and far more than any other band. Nobody else comes close to having such an excellent catalogue of music over the years with no albums that I dislike.

They're not my favorite. They used to be from 2000 until 2007 or so. But for some reason, they are the band I get most excited about new material from.

But in seriousness, they aren't my personal favorite band at the moment. There are better bands out there, though not too many. DT is definitely a Top 10 band for me, I think.

There was a time when I would not have hesitated to answer "Yes" to this.  I absolutely loved everything they did up to and including SDOIT, with just a few tracks on FII not quite being up to my expectations.  But I understood the label pressure to write commercial material around that time and generally gave them a pass on it. 


Anyway....they're probably my "all time" favorite band but as of now they're more like somewhere in my top 5.

Yeah, pretty much this. Discovering Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson, Pain of Salvation and Haken made DT lose the #1 position some years ago. I can't say what my favourite band is, but there's so much ridiculously good music out there and a lot of it is better than DT's recent releases.

the best bands that make their music so complex but at the same time enjoyable and emotional for me are:

1-Genesis (and solo career of each member)
2-Rush
3-Dream Theater
4-other prog giants (Gentle Giant, Yes, PFM ecc.) along with some great prog metal stuff (Vanden Plas)

It's Green Day but DT are up there in the top 3.

Oasis and REM were in there too until they disbanded.

Mastodon are probably my number 2 favourite band.

1.Green Day - Been a fan since 1994. Never let me down.
2.Mastodon - Been a fan since 2004. Loved everything they've done so far
3.Dream Theater. Properly a fan since between Octavarium and Systematic Chaos. Train of thought was the album that got me into them.
4.Metallica & Therapy? - each depending on the quality of their next release.

DT / Mastodon are interchangeable depending on mood.

I voted yest the first time around and today I can really confirm my vote. There are a lot of bands I enjoy really a lot, and I mean REALLY a lot, but there is no other group that I know as deeply as DT, or that I feel as close to me personally as they are.

It feels to me like they are family, the other bands I love being my awesome friends. /almostmarriageanalogy

Dream Theater were my favorite band from my discovery of them in 2006 until about early 2012. After SW "Grace For Drowning" was released late 2011 my faith started to waver, and then I started to get into King Crimson (through the 40th Anniversary Series), Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Frank Zappa and all the great old-school prog bands, and away went DT from #1. They are my 2nd favorite currently active band though...sorry DT.

No, and they never were. Up until a year/year and a half ago, they were my second or third favorite band after Rush and Porcupine Tree but lately I haven't been that into them. I'm sure that'll change when the new album comes out though.
