Are we gonna get different cover art?

The artist who designed the Falling Into Infinity cover didn't like working with pre-existing fonts. DT didn't have a choice in the matter.

This.

Also, I agree with those who don't want a collage style cover. BC&SL looked alright, but it's not a style that I'm really a fan of.

Zook

What was the silver majesty symbol cover? I can't see the pic.

Yeah, I shouldn't have even gone there.  It was funny in my head, and then I regretted posting it.

Yeah, but I find it odd how he used the Dream Theater writing on aCoS.

Oh well, I love Storm Thorgerson. Look at the stuff he drew for Pink Floyd. :D FII was originallya candidate to be the cover of Pink Floyd's "Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd" album.

EDIT: Wait, I meant that DT had a choice between that and another cover, and the cover they denied ended up becoming the cover of Echoes.

They need to get Stevetheater to do the cover art.

I agree. :tup

I dunno, Steve does some good work but his work seems to emulate Syme more than create his own style. Plus some elements of his stuff, notably the recent covers album, have that obvious Photoshop inconsistent lighting effect.
Same goes for Syme, mind, lightswise.

Steve's dead keen with photoshop, think it'd be a very cool move to get him involved. Would like them to go somewhere completely different, though, directionally.

I see I have some fans ;D
Well, everybody knows I'm a big fan of Hugh's work but I've also come to a point where I have to stop with this kind of style.
You don't have to be the greatest photoshopper in the world to make these kind of ''collages''.... just a very imaginary mind and a lot of patience. ;)
But I don't want be a HS copycat, I know I can do that kind of ''thing'' and bands still contact me and tell they love my work which is very flattering of course.

Take a look at your cd (prog/metal) collection... the style Hugh Syme, Thomas Ewerhard, Dave McKean or Travis Smith create is very popular in that scene and I think it's not going to change... theatrical visuals just goes with that kind of music.

When I saw the SDOT cover for the very first time I thought WTF?!!!... that's not metal! :|
Now it's one of my favorite DT album covers because it's so different, so yeah, I'm all for it if they change to a new style.
Maybe I'll do some new DT covers (haven't done that in a while), if I have the time... we'll see. ;)

Actually this would be the perfect opportunity to toss the ill conceived majesty logo, and the not so great Dream Theater typeface. I hope they do it.

I disagree completely. I love the Dream Theater typeface.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

TheMadgician

I love the typeface and the majesty logo. Of course, I'm a creature of habit. While I wouldn't be thoroughly put out if they were to get rid of them for DT11, I'd definitely miss them.

The Letter M

They could do what Spock's Beard did and create a unique logo that's their band name's initial. Spock's has the SB logo (which they've used on every album since Neal's departure), so maybe Dream Theater could create some sort of DT design/logo?

ricky

Pink Dolphins

...and the DT design that has been on every album cover.

There's a tiny part of me that still holds onto the hope that MP will be back in DT for album 12.  If that's so, it would be kinda weird to have the self-titled album be the only one without him...I don't think it's time yet.  Maybe in a couple years.

nah, you're right

no self titled.

for some reason, self titled and DT don't seem right together.

I disagree, it's to be expected and it's cool to see where they place the symbol on each cover.

The thing about using a black background and silver majesty symbol;
They've already used that.

Yes, technically it was just a limited edition thing, and it does look pretty cool, but it has already been used.

What is this?

Plasmastrike

BC&SL Deluxe Box Set.

Big black felt box. Size of a vinyl.

I'm in favour of a simplistic cover art, like the "nothing but a Majesty symbol" one. I don't think that we'll get that, though.

RaiseTheKnife

Octavarium was a cool cover, but having seen AC/DC's Family Jewels cover art earlier in 2005, it didn't feel as original or fresh to me.  Although, I like the concept that it conveyed and that it made me think.

Lowdz

i don't see them ditching the font or the M symbol because they will want to give the impression that it is business as usual.
I like the idea of the M symbol on a plain background, and Hugh Syme has done a bit of that with Whitesnake.

Except that both the symbol and the typeface are already awesome as is.

I think it's way too busy with no real emphasis on any part of it. There are just some small changes that could be done to pull it together much better. The logo mark that is. The typeface could use some improvement but not nearly as much as the logomark.

I agree. It's very busy, with no emphasis. Heck, even just using different colors or even shades for the different parts of the logo could make a world of a difference.
I found the most recent tour shirts were even worse, where the logo was embedded into an even busier Queen-like emblem. I have not felt compelled to buy any DT shirt in a loooong time.

EDIT: Which opens actually another can of worms for me. It has been of course many times said about their music, but even the auxiliary stuff (shirts, videos) seemed a bit "too inspired" by bands who had done it before. DT started using videos in their show after Rush had a lot of success with them (and DT never got anywhere close to the quality of Rush's videos), and their shirts also seemed to copy other bands.

The guy has such a great artistic style, quite subtle and mysterious, which is nice. I still don't mind their current style tbh but I absolutely love Octavarium's artwork.

I hope to see a cover worth a thousand words

That'd be a great album title, actually... Dream Theater's A Thousand Words... fans will abbreviate it ATW... or TW for the lazy.

I'm not sure how using videos in their shows is at all Rush-inspired, a hell of a lot of bands do that these days.

Rush has very special videos, sort-of funny involving band members. Exactly the following DT tour after which Rush started doing them, DT had very similar videos. I remember all my friends saying "yeah, they tried to copy the Rush videos", so I'm not the only one thinking that.

Raphael should do the album, Michaelangelo should do the props for the stage and DaVinci can design the newest equipment for theband.

A few radioactive turtles and a dead, genius Renaissance man makes for an odd combination. But hey, MP left the band, anything is up for grabs

But on topic, Octavarium is Probably my favorite cover, a truly original one. BC&SL was awesome a 50/50 combo of I&W and Awake, and the color scheme is easy on the eyes.
