They've all committed suicide because their lives are complete. We will never know.

SystematicThought

I just hope JR never even touched a continuum or iPod when playing SDV

OptionalPlayer

I could see him using the continuum as the guitar slide. . . we'll see!

Well, that's very true that would work. However anywhere else is questionable  :lol

ZeppelinDT

Well that was awesome.  Definitely worth it.

They also did Through Her Eyes, Coming Home (from Static Impulse), an improv blues jam with ridiculous lyrics James made up on the spot, and then an encore of Spirit Carries On.  James was in rare form.  He was acting pretty silly the whole time...

Jordan covered three PT tunes also earlier in the night.  Instrumental two-keyboard version of "Even Less" with that Turkish kid, then they did "I Drive The Hearse" and "Lazarus" with the singer from that Israeli band.  Pretty awesome night.

Nick

ZeppelinDT

Nah... not Aviv.  Some band from israel that Jordan has worked with. I think they're called "Project RnL" or something.

Nick

ricky

well...

tell us about SVD brotherman.

Dude, you can't just tell us that.

ZeppelinDT

Jordan noodled it up a bit of course, but I thought it was pretty well done.  It was just Jordan and James.  No samples.  I thought they both sounded really good.

Interesting side-note.  James gave a little intro to the song and had nothing but positive things to say about both Kevin and the song.  I believe his exact words were "I think it's a great song".

So there goes the theory about the rest of the band hating it.

He also said that Kevin recorded vocals under James' vocals on the studio version, which I never knew.  Apparently Kevin announced he was quitting the band the day before James started doing vocals.  Then James went in and recorded his vocals for SDV, and the next day Kevin went in and recorded his own vocals under James', which James didn't even find out about until later.

Perpetual Change

Ah, sounds cool. I'm guessing James' voice was good since he usually seems to have no problem singing over soft music. Nice story, too. How was James being silly, though? Hopefully no pirate stuff.

Did they talk about the new drummer? At all?

Global Laziness

No samples? That's rather disappointing.

ZeppelinDT

The extent of the new drummer talk was Jordan saying "The big announcement tonight is that there's no big announcement".

As for James, idunno, he just seemed in a very relaxed and playful sorta mood.  For example, Jordan did a lot of talking earlier in the night, so when James came out, the first thing he said to Jordan was "You should be a singer... you're very long-winded".

Then he started talking about how great the other musicians were, which he followed up by saying "or maybe it's just all the pot and booze I was smoking and drinking backstage", which got a laugh, then he followed up by saying something like "[Looks at Jordan].  I'm kidding!  Look at Jordan getting all mad.  I'm definitely not getting invited back.  [To the audience] Don't do drugs!"

Then Jordan kept calling him a pirate, and James was like "I want to thank Jordan for giving me my new nickname.  Nobody ever even calls me James any more.  I even have fans running up to me in the street saying [does an impression of a geeky fan] Hey Pirate!!! [back to normal James voice].  But it's really tough to pull off, especially with this haircut.  I look more like Miley Cyrus' dad Billy Ray than a pirate".

Then at the start of the encore Jordan started playing a bluesy tune and James just improved ridiculous lyrics... I don't even remember them, but I'm sure somebody recorded them.  After the song JLB was looking up at the balcony and was like "what is that?  I see a camera - I guess that means this'll be on youtube. ...... shit."

Then at one point he had to move his monitors but he was basically just kicking them into place and rearranging the stage himself.

It was all just very relaxed and low-key.  There were probably only a couple hundred people there at most.

Nah. Honestly, any time they've ever used samples, I've always felt that it would have been better if they hadn't.

Funny, I've always been a huge fan of samples in music, with Dream Theater and with other bands.

ZeppelinDT

I like the samples in the song, but I think they would've been out of place in this version of the song.

Sounds cool. Hope to see some of it make its way online!

My favorite part of the night was through her eyes definitely. Love that song

Mebert78

Yeah, it was an nice show for sure.  ZeppelinDT gave a good description. SDV was enjoyable.  It would've been better obviously with a full band and drummer and guitarist, but Jordan did a tasteful version of the song.  I loved hearing JLB talk about SDV before they performed it.  He also said: "I have the utmost respect for Kevin, and I think he's incredibly talented."

Overall an amazing night. Here's the setlist that I wrote as it happened (don't know all the names though)

1. The Silent Man (similar to the version on "Notes on a Dream")
2. Then there was some trippy keyboard thing JR did. It kind of reminded me of Ozric Tentacles but that's all I can really say about it.
3. Even Less (instrumental, with the Turkish kid)
4. I Drive the Hearse (with the Turkish kid and the Israeli singer from that project that he kept talking about)
5. Lazarus (with same two kids)
6. Guitar lead style solo over a drum machine. Was pretty cool and a nice change after the slower covers)
7. Hey You! (grand piano style cover)
8. then all the younger guys came back out (with the keyboardist of the same project) and they did this song where the singer was beatboxing and the three keyboardists were all jamming. Pretty cool
9. They then did a song where the vocals were very Freddy Mercury like and the keyboards were all doing choir patches and strings. It was a really neat song.

Intermission

10. Explorations - This was done by Jordan and the Turkish keyboardist. There were three movements and the entire thing was about 30-40 minutes total. Lots and lots of really cool things going on in this song, and there were a few moments where Jordan used a cool patch to do some awesome leads.

11. King Crimson Medley (instrumental, solo piece that included Epitaph, Moonchild and the title track off ITCotKC)
12. Through Her Eyes (with Pirate)
13. Coming Home (with Pirate and the Turkish Kid)
14. Space Dye Vest (with Pirate)

encore

15. Blues Improv (very funny!)
16. The Spirit Carries On

KevShmev

That is great to hear that JLB said such nice things about both Kevin Moore and the song. :)

And it pretty much contradicts a lot of what Portnoy has said in the past, which is not at all surprising.

Somewhere in the first set there was also an instrumental version of Pink Floyd's "Hey You".  I think maybe between 6 and 7?

If the SDV performance was fine by Mebert, I'm sure it was great by my standards  :lol

I'm also glad Jordan covered so many Porcupine Tree songs and classic prog songs. He's unfairly gotten a reputation of being all about technology and chops, when in fact he's probably the biggest 'classic prog' influence in the band.

tjanuranus

about to upload SDV and the encore. Will have soon for everyone, Turned out GREAT!

Quadrochosis

As far as other antics from the night there was a few cool things

At one point Jordan said something like "the big news is that there is no news. i know you all want to know who it is but tonight isn't the night, and it needs to be saved for the right time. we know your excited but thanks for being patient and just sit tight a bit longer"

At one point JLB was talking about his solo album and the mishap on the tour while the techs were fixing the sustain pedal on one of the keyboards and he said something like "yea, i wish we could have toured, but now my only hope is that Jordan quits the band so we can get a tour done" which i don't think JR or many people in the audience picked up on, but i thought it was funny nonetheless.

As mentioned before JLB randomly decided to move to the side of the stage and started kicking his monitors around

The venue only had about 200 people in it so it was a really cool experience. Overall the feel of the night ended up being a cross between an unplugged dream theater gig and a high school talent show, due to the different "acts" coming out and there being such a variety in the music.

Quadrochosis

Yea, I forgot to include Hey You, I wrote it down, but didn't type it out. sorry haha

Though it rarely shows as it seems whenever he writes with Dream Theater he tends to stick to a strictly electronic/synth metal mode instead of settling back and playing piano or playing a in more traditional clean prog type style. I know what you mean though cause I saw him play with Blackfield a few years ago and he's a completely different musician when he's up there on stage by himself. Hopefully that'll all change with the new album.

It wasn't random.  He was moving because after Eren (the Turkish kid) had a problem with his sustain pedal, he had to move from his side keyboard to the center keyboard, so when he came out, James realized that he was now sitting directly in front of Eren and blocking everybody from seeing him, so he wanted to move over to the side so he wouldn't be blocking Eren.

Really? I didn't catch that. From where I was sitting I could see Eren fine so I didn't think of that when he started moving the monitors.

Yeah, when Eren came out James looked back at him and then said something along the lines of "Wait, now I'm right in front of you".  I don't think he said it into the mic, but the place had pretty good acoustics and I was relatively close so I overheard it.

Mebert78

Btw, I'm the one who yelled out "We love you, James!" when things were quiet.  James said he loves us back.  woo-hoo!   :metal
