Yeah, I didn't mean it as a slight against MP, but he was so vocal about it. Even saying about if Kev hadn't left the band after Awake, the band would've imploded or something like that. I cannot believe that JP's relationship with Kev was as bad as MP's.
If he hadn't left we wouldn't have had a great album such as awake. I think much of the sound and atmosphere in awake came from Kevin's ever growing distance from the band during the writing process.

dvargas

I think nobody has mentioned this but Awake's songs (all of them) were published under OctaMusic/Ytse Jam, Inc.

I think this means that they all share proprietary rights.

I had Octavarium handy... and all the songs were published under Ytse Jam, Inc.

The point that I'm trying to make is that some bands (eg Soundgarden/Alice in Chains) publish their songs differently by author. I don't know what role this ends up playing in the end when it comes to publishing these songs(eg Live CD/DVD) when somebody leaves the band. But just wanted to point out the differences in publishing.

As other mentioned... playing songs live...anybody can do that.

goo-goo

From my understanding from reading interviews and lifting shadows, former members (don't know about MP though) were paid a lump sum so they wouldn't ask for royalties and/or other financial compensation.

Hoping to see this at High Voltage now.

Why?  There aren't many DT songs with less voltage.

blackngold29

Random question I should probably know: Are there any other DT songs that have never been played live?

Birch Boy

I think a ballad-y song... I wanna say from Images And Words? Not sure though.

Martinman300

Only don't look past me. Not sure why, also has lyrics by km, but I guess it's because of all the vocal layers and stuff.

SnakeEyes

Anyone else think it's lame that they didn't release a video of this performance to the internet?  I mean, I understand not releasing the entire performance, but considering Space Dye Vest has never been played live, they couldn't release just this one song?

SystematicThought

Well they can't release it yet, because the show hasn't happened yet.

SnakeEyes

I thought it was last night?

EDIT

DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Nevermind.  :lol

I know "Don't Look Past Me," "The Shattered Fortress" and "Space Dye Vest" have all not been.  Not sure about any others.

Jamesman42

\o\ lol /o/

KevShmev

Oh crap.  That, too.  I completely forgot about that one. :lol :lol

I know, since the actual studio version has been played live. The day they bust out Don't Look Past Me live, ill be a happy man. Its the one song I want to see.

Dont Look Past Me is a top 20 song for me and has one of my top 3 guitar solos.  I really hope they play it someday.

ariich

Cool news, although a little disappointing that this thread ended up with so many digs at Portnoy. Just let it go already, people!

Anyway it's not even DT playing it. It'll be cool to see, but as far as I'm concerned it's more of a cover song than anything else.

RaiseTheKnife

Not sure why everyone has been so dismissive of SDV.  It is a weirdly passionate song, and deserves the same amount of recognition as any other song in the DT catalog.

Been wanting to see this live forever, and i am sick with jealousy that i cannot be at the show tomorrow night.  I would have traveled from CA to see this one song played live, so I hope it appears in future setlists.

Wouldn't it be ripe if DT performs all of their unplayed songs now that MP is not in charge of the setlists.  Sweeeeeeet!

hefdaddy42

I'm hoping that Anna Lee returns to the setlists.

If it sounds like this I will not be happy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZBZ57XfGMg

Holy shit, that's sound like it should be right there on a Megaman game.

Quadrochosis

haters gonna hate, but "You Not Me" isn't as bad as most people make it seem. The original version is superior but the version that ended up on the album isn't really that bad.

Nihil-Morari

SDV on an ipad?

Just throwing it in there.

Nihil-Morari

Oh and in before "Who said anything about Strange Deja Vu?"

100% Agree. Even though it's the worst song on FII. Still a good song though. It's not a bad album at all.. one of their best. And it has Trial of Tears.

I agree, it gets too much hate.

This. I blame snobbery for the YNM hate.

skydivingninja

Or maybe the lyrics and chorus are really bad, combined with music that never reaches any kind of extraordinary height, even though it seems like it will.  I'm not sure how a snobbiness argument comes into play with that one.

ANYways, SDV, any lucky ducks going to Tarrytown tonight?

I blame the terrible lyrics and music.  You Or Me is significantly better, still not a great song though by any means.

I do love FII though.  Definitely in the top half of DT's albums.
