I think/hope that John Myung will have more writing and performing presence on this upcoming album and with Mike Portnoy not not commanding everyone this time around, I think we will see that absolutely. Overall, I think the new album is going to be among their greatest (but then again, I thought Black Clouds And Silver Linings was their best album in probably over a decade).

Just put some "really good...cookies" in the studio with him and he'll be rockin' the whole album.

pogoowner

I HOPE he's very involved, but I don't actually EXPECT him to increase his involvement at all.

JayOctavarium

He's gonna play the bass guitar on the new album... duh

i_am_here_

I hope he ends up writing more independent parts rather than doing what JP is doing  :tup

If I had a nickel for every time this was discussed/ a thread about this was opened up I would be able to go out and buy some new effects pedals or something.  Sorry to sound bitter, but how much could this be discussed?  :deadhorse:

Who are you?

Seriously, I can't tell with the name change and avatar change. Are you me?

I know you, Adami, in more ways than you know...

El Barto

I figure they're all going to feel like they need to pick up some slack, including JM.  I don't think we'll see a huge contribution from him, but I suspect there'll be some added effort.

Volk9

I honestly dont see it changing that much from recent years.

Jirpo

I think he will have a slightly larger role then normal, but Petrucci will contribute the most to make up for MP's songs.

SnakeEyes

I think he'll have a bigger role.  Maybe he'll even get around to playing some basslines on this album!

:: fingers crossed ::

tri.ad

I'm sure he's going to be a bit more involved than on BCASL. Not significantly, though.

Mladen

He'll have more input than on the last couple of albums. With Mike gone, everyone needs to step up a little bit, and I'm sure Myung will realize that.

Lowdz

Well it's his big chance. If he doesn't step it up now he never will. He had plenty to say (for JMX) on the WD&DRU commentary and now, with the "tyrant" gone, he has his chance. Question is, will he take it?

tumbok

he will put enormous effort and return to the early DT years style bassline.
he will be headbanging again in every concert.
he will write half of the album lyrics.
he will make a new instructional videos.
he will play violin again.

yes, he is the JOHN MYUNG with the obsessive compulsive.

This.

TAC

I'd be happy just to hear some bass.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

He plays bass, and it is audible. You guys are silly or have bad speakers (my speakers are alright, so :p)

It is "audible", but would anyone disagree that:

1)  On the past few albums, after mixing, he the least audible by far out of anybody
2)  In live concerts recently, his amp is turned down the lowest out of anybody

Jamesman42

Being the least audible doesn't have anything to do with not hearing him. I can hear him fine.

And live mixing is not what we are talking about.

I just hope that he'll keep forgetting his distortion pedal at home, or at least, the settings he had on BCASL. A little bit of fuzz is fine (FII, TOT), but BCASL was just distortion overkill from JM's side.

I do agree with this.

I liked his use of the wah pedal in Raw Dog, though.
