Who else would be disappointed if Mangini is the chosen one?

With the imminent announcement of the new drummer and many signs pointing to Mike Mangini, who else would be disappointed if he is the one they have chosen?

I have heard him with Steve Vai and on James Labrie's MM, MM2 and EoP and  he just didn't do it for me, as i said before his weird drum setup and especially his awful drum sound are a big turn off for me...

I know that until it's not announced anything can happen but i have a feeling that i'm going to be very disappointed.

Honestly, the longer we wait the more apathetic I'm becoming.

I'd be happy if he was chosen, but somewhat disappointed because I've heard of him before and have been acquainted with his drumming for some time, long before Mike left.

When Mike left, I was hoping the new drummer would be someone I'm new to and have never heard much about. That being said, if Mangini is the new drummer, than full steam ahead, I'll stand behind that choice.

Somewhat, yes. Problem with this wait is that I've had time to get familiar with the choices. Mangini is obviously fast and a good drummer, but nothing I've heard has excited me. Marco Minnemann and Thomas Lang, however, have. But if chosen, I would definitely give Mangini a second chance.

I would be disappointed, but I would still have faith in DT that they made the right choice for them.

I wouldn't be disappointed.

I really like his flow.  He feels very organic and has solid instincts when it comes to elevating a section with his drums.  Maybe he's not as stylistically complete as Portnoy or Lang or Macaluso, but here's the thing.

DT has a history of elevating the musicians within.  DS came into his own as a keyboardist because of DT.  LaBrie became a far more nuanced vocalist.  I like some of JR's pre-DT work, but he grew as a musician like never before starting with SFaM.

Mangini has room to change and grow as a drummer.  I think on a fundamental stylistic level he fits the band very well.  If DT encourages him to become a better drummer, he could create an identity within the band that combines the drumming style MP established with his own individuality.

Whoever the new guy is, his first album will be like ACOS or SFaM.  Not the same as the last guy, but still trying to assimilate the traditions that came before.  I think Mangini could handle that role very well.

The announcement is imminent? I could have said the same thing a month ago. :lol

Seriously though, hopefully it comes soon. While Mangini is not my first choice it is not one I'd be disappointed by.

When I read this, I discovered that this is exactly how I feel...

I think I quit caring about two weeks or so ago.

At this point they could announce that John Travolta is the new drummer and I'd be fine.

I would be kind of disapointed, I think his playing is boring. I would like Wildoer, Minneman or Lang.

Awesome! We can look forward to a song about Xenu! Plus he can save the band a fortune in travel expenses as they fly first class in their own private jet!

Hope my VIP tickets are next to Kelly Preston!!!

.. shit... you were joking weren't you?

But doesn't Aryeon already have the space opera market covered?

Mangini would be the safe choice to me. Lang or Minneman I would be excited by as they both appear to be at the DT level and on the same wavelength musically (Lang's StOrk stuff rather than his sessions with Boyzone etc lol).
Mangini just seems fast but I've not seen anything musical from him, he just appears to be a drummer, albeit a very good one. But until we hear some original music it's impossible to know of course.

He's a great drummer, but I really wish DT would get some Minnemann up in this shiz.

King Postwhore

BTW, I saw him play with DT already.  Durring the 6DOIT tour, Mike M. sat in on Mike's drum solo at the  smaller kit they did a dueling solo when I saw them at the Orphium in Boston.

We as fans have no idea what direction the band wants in going forward....whatever choice they made is going to best to take them in that direction, MP has said himself that there are lots of drummers that could play his stuff, so that being said I'm sure whomever they choose can play the old stuff, but much more importantly, can play what the band sees for themselves in the future. They are not here to pander to us , they are making music that they are happy making, plain and simple

Mladen

Whoever they picked, I won't be disappointed. If the drummer was good enough for them, then all I can do is be satisfied. Lets be happy that they didn't take a break.

dedSurroun

I wouldn't be excited or disappointed. All I care about is how it sounds, as opposed to who's playing the drums. Put Kermit there and if it the music is amazing, then hell yeah.

Chino

Is he the drummer on Vai's Live at the Astoria dvd? If so, I'm cool with him.

No that was Virgil Donati

Pirate

I'd be disappointed. Then again, I'd be disappointed with any drummer other than Gavin Harrison.

MuumiPeikko

I wouldn't be disappointed. Mike is a great drummer. But, as I say many times before on different boards - I'm sure, new drummer is not Mike Mangini. He's a tutor at Berklee. And DT require a full-time busy. I doubt if he prefer DT.

The main reason Mangini is suspected is specifically because he's apparently quit all of his teaching jobs.

For the five-billionth time, Gavin Harrison is a definite no.

aurorablind

I would be kind of dissapointed. He's awesome on many levels, but i've been hoping for Marco Minneman ever since the speculations began.
The things Minneman does with time-signatures and grooves are just mindblowing, while the only things ive ever heard from Mangini are either really fast and technical or vert straight forward.
However, im sure Mangini would fit perfectly, it's just not him im hoping for

I would be really sad if GH abandoned Porcupine Tree for Dream Theater. I love both bands, but I'd like to hear someone I'm not familiar with behind DT's drums. Also, I think DT's music isn't of GH's taste, so... you'll probably be disappointed! ;)
