You can argue that there's no difference between co-founder and founder, but there's a definite different between Co-Founder and/or founder and "THE" founder.

Yes, but he doesn't say he is the founder.  SE, Kev, and others, I see where you are coming from, and I'm not going to say you are "wrong," but I'm with ariich.  When Mike first made the statement, I never even thought twice about it because, to me, it does not imply that he is the founder (which would not be accurate), but that he is a founder (which is entirely accurate).

Fair enough.  Just to clarify - I was actually referring to when people say that Portnoy founded DT, not when he said it, which I had never heard him say.  I was talking mainly about fans who say it.  But, I get it now.... plus, Petrucci's website says he, "founded" DT.  I wasn't aware of that.

I have never heard anyone say that Portnoy and only Portnoy founded DT.

Actually, right on the front-page of  MikePortnoy.com is says that he is "the founder and ex-drummer of Dream Theater." I don't really see what the big deal about it is either, but the fact that JP updated his page immediately afterwards to say something similar about himself does lead me to believe that there's some kinda back-and-forth going on between those two. Again, nothing really substantial enough to look into, but I definitely get the feeling the Mike and the other guys are kinda secretly giving each other the finger from across the room.

Over at JP's site, in the bio section it still says "
John Petrucci is best known as the guitarist and founding member of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. "

But before all this it didn't say anything about whether he was a "founding" member or not, it just said he was a member, right?

I have no idea about that (never visit his site), i doubt it though. They are all most famous as founding (or not) members of DT.

Quick check in Archive.org solves this mystery - https://web.archive.org/web/20080729233618/www.johnpetrucci.com/biography.htm

What don't you guys understand about MP being the center of the Earth?  This isn't meant to bash him, but c'mon. Remember who we're talking about.

They're saying that Portnoy founded DT?  I didn't know it was losted.  Although, if it weren't for him, I'm sure someone would've eventually founded it.  Now that MP is losted, will he be able to founded DT again?

"Founded" is a perfectly grammatical past-tense verb...
