When I said subpar I didn't mean bad. Just not up to par with their earlier stuff. Sub par albums to me would be ToT, 8vm, SC and BCSL. All decent, but a decline from 6doit and before.
In all due respect, I know that many share this opinion as if its a fact among  DT fans that the last last 3 albums are a decline from the earlier albums. I would argue that songs like ITPOE, Octavrium, A Nightmare To Remember, and The Count Of Tuscany are better songs then any songs on FII or Awake. That's how I feel anyways. :tick2:
Words cannot describe my inner nerd rage. :neverusethis:

And just for that Tick (the awake comment) I'm not going to use any lube.
Out of curiosity Adami, name a song on Awake that is a better song than Octavarium, in your opinion?

Every song off awake is better than every song off 8vm. With one exception, that The Mirror isn't as good as the song 8vm.

To be honest, I nerdrage at more things here alone than most other DTF users do in a lifetime.

If the album flops, there's a good chance it will be because of the new drummer.  In that case, DT may choose to lay him off.

By that point, Mike might want to get back in the band, so there might be some underhand dealings, all resulting in him getting back for DT12.

However, I doubt that the band will give up completely.  They all still have a ton of optimism and energy.

I would be stoked to see DT11 beat out BCSL at the #6 slot of the Billboard rankings (although they don't really mean much).  I think it's possible, since Mike brought people over from Avenged Sevenfold, and the new drummer will bring even more people over from his own fans.  Not to mention there is probably more excitement from DT's own fans for DT11 than I can remember.

I really hope that Dream Theater are above basing their future plans on fans' reactions to a new album. The only time they should disband are if their passion for music-making dies out.

This is one of the reasons that this was such a bad time for Mike to leave. While there will likely still be A7X fans that check out DT11, there would almost definitely have been more if he were still there.
I think it will be more interesting to see how many new fans they get from having toured with Maiden.

The next album will probably do better than BC&SL. I can't see Mike's departure deterring many DT fans, since most of us are DT fans first. New fans from Maiden and A7X will push the sales number up; the question is by how much. Obviously, depending on who the new drummer is, they may bring some fans with them too.
If the album for some reason doesn't sell as well, I think they'll definitely keep going anyway, with the new drummer.

They'll keep going.  Losing Neal Morse didn't deter Spock's Beard, and DT has a bigger following.

That is an odd way to look at it, considering, a) Spock's Beard popularity, which wasn't even that big in the first place, took a big hit in the wake of Neal's departure, and b) Neal Morse was SB's main writer and creative force; Portnoy was neither with Dream Theater.

I have to agree with Tick here. Except for some possible exceptions such as Trial of Tears and Hell's Kitchen, the 3 recent albums have better songs, while the other albums are probably more consistant when grouped together.

blackngold29

It all depends on how much fun they have. If they enjoy the time making it and it flops, they would probably give it another go; maybe with MP, maybe not. If it's a really big drag making the album without MP and it flops, then they'll probably take a break.

I have difficulty seeing MP leaving, them make one more album that will always be seen as 'different' from the others whether it's good or not, then retiring.
