I guess I'm just afraid of another FII...

kevin shirley is only 1 of a bazillion producers out there. there ARE producers capable of maintaining DT's sound and essence instead of slitting their throats. case in point, Nick Raskulinecz:

Why? Its their best album not named Images and Words or Awake.

After his work with Coheed and Rush I'd love to see Nick produce a DT album.

Quotethere will be many more opinions and views and situations that normally you might not have heard from. So I think, if anything, it's gonna be very cool.

This really says something to me about the level of control that Mike had.
Actually, it doesn't necessarily say anything about his level of control.  Mike really enjoyed the communication with the fans.  Perhaps, they simply didn't feel compelled to do it since Mike enjoyed it so much..

yes, I believe that as well. They just left Mike to do what he enjoyed the most and they step aside, just looking.

I sorta know what he means. FII suffered from some really weird creative decisions. But which of those decisions were made by the label and which decisions were made by the Kevin Shirley's? But then again, a lot of little things on FII are very good. How many of those were Shirley's ideas and how many of those were the band's?

One thing I would say about the producers of I&W, Awake, and FII. They really managed to take the songs DT wrote and push them to their limits sonically. The songs on the Awake demos are almost exactly the same as the final album (Caught in a Web being the major exception), but they feel completely different. David Prater gave I&W its "sound." FII is, I'm pretty sure, the most sonically layered DT album. So many overdubs that really help the songs. If you listen to the making of SFAM, the quality of the songs as written is very similar to how they sound recorded.

But then I can immediately flip this in another direction. The Train of Thought demos feel totally different than the album. All the instruments got hyper focused into their roles in the sound in a good way. So maybe writing the material outside the studio and having a chance to think about it is the answer?

Listening in, right now (7 minutes to go). WTF am I listening to? Did the drummer just have an epileptic seizure halfway into the song?

I like the song when James is singing, but the screaming is really killing it right now...

and by killing it, I mean ruining the song...

I have no problem with screaming vocals but initially didn't warm up to the JLB song at all, but now have no problem with it. It gives it another dimension.

It too EOP a couple listens for me to really start digging it, but screaming will always escape me.

Chino

I'm digging this one a lot more.

edit:

never mind, more screams...  :sadpanda:

ScioPath

Yeah SI's pretty good overall. Worth the listen.
