I heard the sample...interesting fusion of styles and sounds, but couldn't he have picked a better name? Does he know what krump means?

Judging by the album art, yes.

Ben_Jamin

Lol at the title. wish i could listen to it

I currently have $0.27 on iTunes.

rumborak

His solo output is always a bit too "plastic" for me. It's probably good stuff, but not my style.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I like the electronic vibe going on. He should do more things like this.  :metal

I like it!  :tup

Edit: I think it could have been a bit shorter, but it's still a good song.

kirbywelch92

Makes me think of video game menu music.

About the new song: I think that the thing I dont like about it is it just seems to jump from one section to the next without smooth transitions many of the times. Its almost like it lacks the focus to stay in one groove, or at least progress naturally into the next one. That being said, I really liked most, if not all, of the "sections". I especially love the beginning.

I definitely agree with this.

Sounds like it suffers from Raw Dog syndrome.

I like it. It'd be cool if there were a section on the new DT album where Jordan's playing is brought to the forefront other than just for the sake of a keyboard solo.

RaiseTheKnife

While I agree with rumborak's opinion of JR's solo stuff, I actually like this new song.  I've been nerding out big time on the movie "King of Kong," and this reminds me of some of the compositions in that flick.

Anyway, worth the 0.99 cents on iTunes.

It's an OK song. There's definitely a lot that could be improved (strucutrally), but overall, it's not bad.

I especially like the beggining and the part between 03:25 - 03:58.

I can agree on this too, but the only real strange transition I find from the intro-> next part, it's a little to abrupt but the other transitions are better.

DarkLord_Lalinc

Some really interesting ideas, some random changes. It's cool.

Orbert

I can't believe that he's so far into the "cool sounds are everything" mode that he's actually forgotten everything he knows about composition.  Therefore those sudden random changes aren't really "random" -- they're for effect.  Good stuff, but I find Jordan's solo work to have little replay value.  He's a brilliant keyboard player, don't get me wrong, but there's something missing.  I rarely get all the way through one of his albums.

orcus116

Might have something to do with that plastic sound rumborak was talking about. I honestly can't really view this as a song at all. It just sounds like a collection of riffs he improvised.

Zorander

Bought the song just now and regret my decision :sadpanda: That was not my cup of tea at all .. To my ears, a random collection of strange sounds and samples jumbled together to make wacky sound/equipment/software experiment. Absolutely nothing to hear there..

Sometimes Jordan just takes it too far into that experimental scene for me to follow :P His piano improvisations though, they are something else!

robwebster

3 minutes in - sounds a bit like he's auditioning to write music for video games. No bad thing imo. You can pick out boss themes, underworld themes, overworld themes, etc. etc. amidst the piece.

Jordan would be really good at scoring video games, actually.

Perpetual Change

Sadly, I think the guys in DT may not realize some of their potential in that respect.

When I listen to stuff like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDGBUp25i8U) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFj-zNYb9n4) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGQrL3Qaqko) I think- Jesus Christ Dream Theater could do an amazing job with a video soundtrack.

But then DT finally get the chance and we get "Raw Dog."

Not that Raw Dog is bad-- I just think they would have done something completely different if they had known what kind of music games actually feature. But I don't think any of the guys in the band actually play games, so they wouldn't know.

I don't think Raw Dog was written for use in-game, pretty sure they were aware that it was going on a companion EP. They needed it to be a heavy song, not a video game song. Plus it was mainly made up of leftover bits and bobs, the riffs were never written with a video game in mind.

The band have definitely got games consoles, they used to do those events where they'd play games against fans. And I'm pretty sure JP's on record as being a bit of a fan of the Sega in its heyday.

So they'd definitely have at least some idea.

hefdaddy42

I agree that DT could probably do amazing video game work, but to me, their real untapped potential is film.  From the very beginning of my fandom (1992), I have always thought that a lot of their best music had a cinematic feel, a really epic flair.  But hey, that's just me.

About this song: the 30-second preview didn't do anything for me.  I love a lot of what JR does, but some of his solo stuff just doesn't do much for me.

changing_seasons

The more I listen to this, the more I like it.

And I usually don't care for electronica at all.
