I have recently got in to Dream Theater and have bought Scenes From A Memory, Octavarium and Black Clouds. My favourite by quite far is Scenes, followed by Black Clouds and then Octavarium.

What would be a good album to buy next?

tri.ad

Images And Words and Awake. Also, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.

PlaysLikeMyung

Awake

then Images and Words

then Falling Into Infinity

enjibenji89

Cheers guys

What's there most experimental/wild card cd?

orcus116

Hard to say. Since you're used to the sound of those three I'd actually recommend Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. It's pretty all over the place and definitely the last album I'd say that actually experimented with stuff. Falling Into Infinity is your wild card since it seems to stand by itself (in a lateral way). Images And Words and Awake are probably their best two, IMO, but they're nothing like the newer stuff.

YtseBitsySpider

get Images and Words.
Then Awake
Then 6 Degrees
THen Millenium.

Wild card for me is Sytematic Chaos......it's just a total wank fest with all over the map noise disguised as songs. It's an album that really tested my faith that the band could ever produce quality music ever again.

Then BCSL restored that faith.
Then the drummer kicked himself out of the band.

AwakeFromOctavarium

For me, wild card is Falling Into Infinity.

Ok thanks so much, I'll get the ones recommended and will be buying Systematic Chaos just out of pure curiousity.

Final question, what's your guys favourite DT album?

Scenes is epic to me, every song I find incredible. The song Home is probably my least favourite, but I still will listen to it because there are parts in the song that are amazing. It is now one of my favourite albums of all time.

Black Clouds is my second favourite, compared to Scenes it's 'good'. I love the first two tracks but find the rest of the album good but not great.

Octavarium is my least favourite. I do think some of the songs are amazing and do listen to them but the whole album doesn't feel like there is much passion in it. It sounds like they were listening to a lot of Muse and U2 at the time, I don't mean that in a they sound like copying but it sounds like they were heavily influenced by them on this album.

Mladen

Images and word is a must, as well as Awake. Those two are my favorites, along with Scenes. And then there's Systematic chaos, an album I absolutely love, but a huge number of people doesn't. So it really is a wild card, although I hope you'll like it.

ZBomber

Definitely Images and Words for your next purchase. Its the album a lot of fans start with (along with Scenes).

Perpetual Change

Get the DVD- Live Scenes From New York. The live Scenes stuff is cool, and the bonus gives you a great idea about the bands earlier material.

For albums, I'd say go with Train of Thought or Six Degrees next.

YtseBitsySpider

Images and Words is my fav
followed by Scenes
and

When Dream and Day Unite. It's where it all started for me I have a nostalgic attachment to that CD. I love charlie too...so.

Perpetual Change

Charlie is great, and his solo project is awesome too. He gets way too much heat for ripping off DT and riding their wave. That's ridiculous. Saying Dominici is just riding DT's wave is like saying Jon Arch solo was just an attempt to ride on Ray Alder FW's fame.

enjibenji89

Thanks for all the recommendations. I am going to buy Images and Words then Train of Thought, and then go from there

jcmoorehead

My fav is actually Octavarium, was the first album I got and I've never looked back since.

However I find all their albums to be great so saying I like one over the others isn't really saying too much. Each one has different qualities that make them great.

Perpetual Change

The song Octavarium is perhaps DT's best song. But the album itself is meh.

I think they've done better, but it's certainly the highlight of the album.

MykeHavoc

No one has suggested the A Change of Seasons EP yet?!! :omg:

Definitely get that, as well as Images & Words, as well as Awake. Follow that up with 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

After that, you an pick the (in my opinion) lesser releases if they so interest you: When Dream and Day Unite, Falling into Infinity, Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos. If you really love'em, start grabbing their live releases and DVDs.

I will definately be purchasing a lot more DT albums, I plan to buy the back catalog of cds/eps by them. They have grown on me so much and are slowly becoming an obsession. I can't stop listening to Scenes, it's so incredible. The songs are infectious.

And thank you for the recommendations, I'm definately most curious about there heavier work

This post is all you need to know.  Based on what you've heard and like, Six Degrees is the next logical choice.

Images and Words and Awake are considered by most (including myself) to be DT's two best albums, but like Orcus said, they really don't sound much like their later stuff at all.  So keep that in mind if/when you pick 'em up.

I agree with both of them. Also, SDOIT is my favorite DT album, so I may be a bit biased, but if you want to discover some of their experimental and heavy sound, this is a good start. After that, get TOT and SC.

ScioPath

I&W, Awake, Scenes, and SDOIT are all pretty much tied for me.

as do i, of course when i got into them their most recent album was SDOIT (which i also recommend to the OP). so there wasnt as many albums to get, it was either the I&W/Awake era, or the SFAM/SDOIT era (or others)

Dude, sometime soon after you've purchased Awake OR Images and Words, get the "Live in Tokyo/Once in a Live Time" DVD set. It's cheap, and it'll fill you in on the band's "early" history. Listen to the entire thing with the full band audio-commentary. You'll know the band's history and fall in love with their personalities immediately.

Awake is quite heavy but it has some brighter moments too and it's my favorite DT album, so I would recommend it.
