What songs should DT play to check the technical side of the drummers "tryout" ?

6:00
Dance of Eternity
Learning to Live

Fields10

I think those three you mention are pretty spot on.

What about:
Metropolis pt. 1
Maybe Beyond This Life or Finally Free?
And one the "epics".

AwakeFromOctavarium

Metropolis
Pull Me Under
Panic Attack
The Dance of Eternity
Constant Motion

Basically their most played songs plus hard ones.

tri.ad

One that shows the technical side best: Metropolis Pt. 1.
One that shows the groovy side best: 6:00, Lines In The Sand or Trial Of Tears.
One that shows the sensitive side best: Wither.
And one DT classic (apart from Metropolis Pt. 1): Learning To Live

wolfking

As I Am
Fatal Tragedy
I Walk Beside You
Learning to Live
Instrumedley
Octavarium

dammit i was just gonna say pretty much that.... along with something from the more metal side... like replace Wither with TGL or As I Am....

i have a feeling the J's are going to shock us when they decide on a drummer.... Its probably going to be someone we never would have expected

Fields10

TGL?
Have you meant TGP (the glass prison)?

Zydar

DT will never reach the musical heights in this gem again.

Yeah, I third those songs, and the Mirror or TGP as the metal song. The J's, a new/alternative/second band name?  :rollin

I'll add The Silent Man or Hollow Years to the sensitive side as well.

Sir GuitarCozmo

You'd HAVE to have something like Wither or Hollow Years to balance it out, so that they can see the person can play with restraint as well as aggression.

BRGM

I'd say

The Great Debate
The Dance of Eternity
Take Away my pain
This Dying Soul/Honor Thy Father

El Barto

Doesn't matter.  They can bring in 40 different guys that can play Mike's work, no problemo.  The important thing will be how they jam together.  My guess is that a jam session is much more important than demonstrating you can play 6:00.

Sigz

^Just what I was going to say. Hell, Icy could join the band if they're just looking for someone who can play the material. I'm guessing they're far more concerned with the drummer working and playing well with everyone else.

EPICVIEW

What about Nightmare?

I joke I joke....LOL

Marvellous G

Really, SDOIT. It tests endurance and skill, and softer stuff.

This. Also Constant Motion, Metropolis and The Dance of Eternity.

Agreed. With that in mind, picking a song or two just to kind of break the ice is usually a good idea as well.

This. And that being a good option, I'd second someone's mention of SDOIT in its entirety, and would suggest Metropolis Pt. 1 and 6:00.

Also, it'd be cool to see footage of said auditions. Maybe.
\o\ lol /o/

Surprised no one has mentioned New Millennium yet. Certain drum parts in there are quite tricky, especially the groovy section.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I think DT's making a Big Brother-like show where lots of drummers are going to be locked inside a house. He who manages to stay alive, will reign supreme.

I was just thinking about this, lol.  Remeber that show a couple of years ago where INXS got a new lead vocalist?  I liked it. But that kind of thing is easier to do with singers than instrumentalists.

Yup.  I went to a Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai) bass clinic, and that was the REAL audition for Steve Vai's band a couple of years.  He couldn't every play all of "Freak Show Excess" spot-on, but Vai liked jamming with him, so Bryan got into the band.  Wouldn't be surprised if DT had an audition like that.  But the drummer definitely needs to show he can play the old stuff like 6:00 and The Dance of Eternity.

Hell yeah  :D The only thing is, they're feeding the losers' corpses to John Petrucci.

theaterofdreams

I would add Stream of Consciousness to the list

Ben_Jamin

They'll jam together and if they connect that's their drummer. they'll ask them to play a couple of select songs of course before they jam, would be nice if it was one song from each album.

MetropolisxPt1

Audition songs should be

DoE
6:00
Hells Kitchen
Surrounded
SoC

Yes i know their are 3 instrumentals on my list but if they can make it through those 5 songs they could play just about every DT song.

SnakeEyes

Here's what I think:

JP said they aren't looking for a temporary replacement.  If that weren't true, he wouldn't have said it.  JP seems like a straight shooter to me.  He wouldn't be spending time, answering questions and giving misinformation.

With that being said, I think Portnoy could return under one - and, only one - condition:  the new drummer isn't working out and Portnoy wants to come back at the same time.  I don't believe for a second that, had DT been in love with Derek overall, they would have replaced him with Jordan.  I think the only reason they kicked out Derek and had Jordan was because they weren't pissing their pants over Derek to begin with.  That's obviously just speculation, but I think it's at least a fair speculation considering what happened with Falling into Infinity and all that.  I think they wanted to go into a heavier, more shreddy direction, Derek wasn't the right player and Jordan became available.

That COULD happen with a drummer.

edit..

Especially if they go back into a more Proggy/ less metal direction and lose some of the metal fanbase they have acquired over the past few years.  They might start to feel as if they "need" Portnoy to come back to keep the the metal fanbase.  I mean, I HOPE NOT.  But, I still think it's a possibility.

ResultsMayVary

Just because MP is gone doesn't necessarily mean they're going into a more proggy direction. JP is a huge metal fan, as well.

This has been bugging me with people saying the metal side is going to go just because MP is gone...
