Why has there not yet been any lyrics by Rudess?

changing_seasons

He seems to be under the impression that the band is working just fine as it is, and he doesn't want to impose 'new' traditions, i.e. introducing other lyricists than JP/MP (and the occasional JLB). He has said that if the opportunity arises though, he would be more than happy to write some lyrics.

This is from his online sessions at vokle.com.

I'm sure that guy has to has some ideas... Would be interesting to hear unless its some peachy political stuff...

Couldn't be any worse than Lifting Shadows Of A Dream.

I guess he got his "fix" on his solo album, so maybe he's fine with that.

He seems like a smart guy though with some depth to him, so I could see him writing some good lyrics.

Thats their least impressive work I believe and I don't see them making the same mistakes as they did then at this point in their career.

Thats all I meant.

Lifting Shadows Off A Dream is one of the best sets of lyrics in the entire DT catalogue.  WTF

How about those awful lyrics on "Voices"?  And boy, does "Trial of Tears" ever suck.

Hopefully they'll never revisit THAT territory again.

I hope they call in Desmond Child again for the next album.

This. Although being smart and having some depth doesn't necessarily mean an ability with lyrics of course, but I quite like the few lyrics he's written for his solo stuff. Nothing earth shattering, but nice and always very fitting with the music.

I like all the other Myung songs. I just find lyrics like...

QuoteAs the rain is pouring down
Tears of sorrow wash his mind
Drifting with the current
This stream of life flows on

QuoteLifting shadows
off a Dream once broken
She can turn a drop of water
Into an ocean

QuoteHe pours his soul into the water
reflecting the mystery
She carries him away
and the winds die slowly

To be "forcefully deep" AKA tacky.

Way to get upset over an opinion...  ::)

hefdaddy42

It's not forcefully deep, although I find it ironic that you used the word "deep."  One of the keys to the song is the application of different variations of the motif of water for different effects and meanings.  Just look at the passages you quoted.

This is the kind of literary depth to which Myung can aspire, and the rest of the people in the band can't (or won't).  That's why it's a shame that he hasn't contributed any lyrics since SFAM (and those don't really count, IMHO).

Jamesman42

Eh, opinions are what they are.

But realize that you will meet a crap load of opposition in response to that particular one. I disagree with it as well. I don't see how it's forcefully deep or bad. Maybe not the best ever, but it's almost impossible for me to fathom someone saying they are bad.
\o\ lol /o/

LCArenas

Rudess can write some good lyrics. Wasn't he the one who wrote the "Tear Before the Rain" lyrics in Rythm of Time? Those lyrics were good and they also had something related to water, as in Myung's lyrics.

Damn Myung needs to write again. The LSoaD lyrics are incredible IMO.

Their next album should just be an iphone application concept album.

On topic: I think JR lyrics would be cool, but we're unlikely to see them.

Gorille85

I not even sure if he is interest in doing that. I mean he's much more into music then lyrics.

EDIT: 200 posts! Who's the noob now??

fsh3702

i'm really missing JM's lyrics style, like learning to live, it's too bad he stopped to write new staff.

one thing i love about the lyrics of "lifting shadow of a dream" is its repetitiveness, very interesting, this song lyrics' repeating itself is not boring at all but very fascinating, it's a great coordination between music and lyrics.
