Am I the only one who thought of David Prater? Maybe Steven Wilson?

Why would Wilson produce an album of music he's publicly stated he doesn't like?

lateralus88

Andy Sneap. Even if it isn't all that metal, he would still do one fucking hell of a job.

This. I would rather Wilson spend his time elsewhere.

Without Portnoy, maybe he sees another potential. I don't know.

Which bands and albums he has produced?

Metropolis Pt. II

Mike Portnoy.  :neverusethis:

Just kidding.

I wasn't aware he disliked it...

Arcaeus

Unrelated, but I find it amusing that on a progressive metal forum, two of the member base's biggest idols -- Steven Wilson and Daniel Gildenlow -- dislike progressive metal. :lol

With Mike gone, do you think Prater would be a producer that would be cool to work with.

Wait though, JLB and Prater didn't get along either

orcus116

Maybe, though Prater's made some great decisions on the albums he did work on.

Andy Sneap seems a bit balls-to-the-wall metal, looking at his CV.

My instinct would be Paul Northfield. Or possibly Kevin Shirley. Both brilliant choices. I've said that I'd quite like Paul Northfield as a producer for a little while, now. He knows their music, he "gets" it, he "gets" the dynamic, he's got a brilliant CV, he'd be perfect for the job.

Or, most likely, John Petrucci.

I chose Andy purely because of how his albums end up sounding. He has just done metal related stuff, but I could honestly see something promising with DT depending on the content they go for.

SHIRLEY

I hardly want Shirley after the pathetically produced shitstorm that was The Final Frontier.

I have a strange feeling they'll still self-produce.

John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess.

I don't see how Steve Wilson's position as a producer got more likely, to be honest.

SoundscapeMN

David Botrill or even Rick Rubin come to mind. I actually could see Rick Rubin really doing good things with them.
"I have facility enough that I can throw down something, and play it, and play it correctly, and play it in time, but that doesn't make good records.  What makes good records for me, is when you capture a performance or you get some feeling that you get on tape and that you know you can't plan for it" -Kevin Gilbert

tri.ad

Oh God, not Rubin. He'll totally ruin the next albums' sound.

You know what will ruin the next album's sound? An outside producer.

I don't get what Rubin is supposedly so good at. He seems to be the, "this band has been garnering a following for years and years, and now we're going to make their most commercial album ever" kind of producer.

I'll 2nd Petrucci and Rudess. Maybe with Shirley brought in to help in minor ways, and of course with the mixing and so on. I think that would be quite good.

No. An outside ear is crucial.

I agree, but I think that they will continue self-producing the albums. As far as I know, JP wants to keep the producer's position within the band as well.

I agree, but do you think we'll get that? I know JP viewed his experiences with producers positively, but there's part of me that thinks he also likes doing his own thing as much as Portnoy did.

Nobody said "Bob Rock".

That'd really suck. As a creative person myself one of the things I look forward to is criticism of my work as I'm progressing. The best end products come out that way.

tri.ad

Well, maybe they'll decide as a whole band this time (including JM and JLB), so I wouldn't rule it out. But I still think that an outside producer isn't as likely as some want it to be.

Aniland

As cool as Devin Townsend would be, he'll be way too busy between Ghost, his new NA tour, Deconstruction, eventually Z2...and that's all going into past March!

Yeah, but with Iron Maiden "Kevin Shirley" is merely a pseudonym employed by Steve Harris.
