Really good interview that I found on the JLB forum: https://www.jameslabrie.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=6d4e8994f2f76d1798df124214ac02d5&topic=693.0

or direct: https://www.thedailyrock.com/2010/08/02/interview-with-dream-theater-lead-vocalist-james-labrie-and-live-photos/

I find it cool that he mentions how bored he are of singing the same stuff every night, on the maiden tour, and that he likes to be "on his toes" when it comes to more varied setlists. I like how he says that there is a thin line with bringing in one of your children on a solo record too. Like it had been said before, James seems to be such a down-to-earth- and genuinely nice person.

Ben_Jamin

That's actually funny. I Bet he's down for Take The Time, and the second verse in voices, not every night but now and then. But you know how stupid their rules are.

The best part of that interview, in my opinion, was when he talked about singing technique.  As we are all aware, his live performances have drastically improved.  I think we can all stop wondering why!  It seemed like he really knew what he was talking about.  In fact, I haven't seen him get that detailed when it comes to technique, so that was quite interesting.  I just wish he had learned all that stuff fifteen years ago!  LOL

Good interview. I hope he isn't getting bored with DT.

Zook

I wouldn't doubt it. Seems like he knows he's about as important to the other guys as yesterdays bowel movement.

His interviews are more enjoyable than others for me. Plus, he is so funny guy.

He's a really charismatic guy lately, which is cool.

And I don't mean this as a slight to Mike, but I was really getting sick of the onslaught of Mike interviews that were happening constantly when Black Clouds was coming out, because it's nice to see the perspective of the other guys once in awhile. Also, I think in recent years Mike seems SO concerned about the fan reaction that his interviews tend to be really "safe" and "predictable." The result makes for some pretty boring interviews.

I love interviews with James. He always gives thoughtful responses, he's charismatic, and I'm always interested in what he has to say on vocal technique.

Do you have any other statements for us that are backed by absolutely nothing?

Zook

I think it's time to change your diaper, Nick.

Nick

You don't see how what you said can be irritating when it is based off an assumption that is put forward as fact but based on absolutely nothing? It is one thing thing to ask the question, "I wonder if the other guys don't care about JLB", it's another to simply say that is the case and then work from there.

bosk1

Yeah, that really was just a dumbass thing to say, Zook.

The only thing that bothers me is how in that 6 Degrees chapter of Lifting Shadows, Mike talks about James like he's some kind of fossil. Paraphrasing here, Mike basically says "I don't like James style of singing that much any more, and if the band were formed now we'd go for a different kind of guy." That just seems really unfair to me. Like, if DT were formed now, they'd also go for a drummer that can actually do some decent blast-beats and stuff, but whatever. What people like about Dream Theater is who they are and were, not who they wish they could be as they approach a mid-life crisis stage in their career.

But I guess we can never really know how the guys really treat James. Or vice versa. Ultimately, all we know is the guys have been together a long time and have experienced on a fraction of the drama many other bands face. That doesn't leave so much room for speculation otherwise, imo.

The impression I get is that when Mike says things like that, he's coming at it entirely from a musical perspective, and not at all a personal one. Do I disagree with him on that? Yes. I don't think it's intended to be at all malicious though.
I get the impression that Mike is the kind of guy who doesn't always consider the implications of something before he says it. It would probably be better if he didn't say things like that about one of his bandmates, but it seems more like a passing thought than something he holds as a strong opinion.

Slain

What a great interview, James always comes off as a really easy going, but very committed and serious to what he does.

TAC

I didn't want to start another thread, but there's another interview I stumbled on today. Short, but cool.

Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Another good one.

I like how most of his answers start with ''Uhm, I mean, you know...''

perfey

^^ Yeah lol.

I liked who he was asked to sing in the end of the inteview lol.

Bone_Daddy

I produced this interview back in 2007 with ManiaTV. James was fantastic and had a lot to offer. You'll have to forgive the cookie-cutter format and run-of-the-mill questions but that's what the show creator wanted.
