Have you guys heard the majesty demos? I just heard them for the first time last night, and HOLY CRAP they are so good! I would argue that as an album, the Majesty Demos is the most melodic of any DT release since. I was so surprised. Also, the Maiden/Priest/Rush influence is very evident.

Yeah, definitely a good number of us have heard them.  I personally like them, but I think the more common attitude is significantly more negative.

It had maybe enough decent, complete songs for an EP and lots of fun goofing around/jamming, etc.  Some cool stuff, but not enough finished material for an album as I recall.  It'd be cool if they eventually dropped another one or two of those tunes into a live set, but I'm not sure it will ever happen.  At least we have two of them.

Really?

Really?

yeah, it is more sentimental to me, but good stuff on it as well

The Majesty Demos are the last six tracks on the Ytsejam Records release.  Everything else is not actually part of Majesty Demos, just collected together with them for the release.

At 37:19 total, it's a reasonable length for an album, especially being only 6 tracks. Had it been on vinyl, it would have fit in the order the tracks are on now (split 3 and 3 of course).

It's a good collection of songs, and in the context of when it was made by the band members, they show some impressive skills. I will be listening to this today and revisit an embryonic Dream Theater.

Eh, some of the songs are OK. Chris Collins makes it difficult to enjoy, and some of the songs were still sort of amateur-ish.
However I appreciate the enthusiasm they had back in those days. And when LaBrie sings any of these songs, its always a treat.

Global Laziness

I love the raw Rush/Maiden feel to them. Obviously the production quality and Collins' voice leave a lot to be desired, but they're still fun to listen to from time to time.

tri.ad

The music on there is pretty decent and shows the potential of the four guys, but Chris Collins' voice was often pretty annoying and his style and vocal lines sometimes unfitting.

Global Laziness

Because of this thread, I decided to listen through them again for the first time in a while.

CAUTIONARY NOTE: Do not listen on shitty laptop speakers or Collins' shrillness with intensify tenfold and your ears will bleed.

It's not the laptop speakers.

Not that his vocals are really that good or anything, but some of you really oversell the negativity.  It could easily have been far worse, especially considering the lesser production quality they had.

Oh yeah no doubt.
The songs are still pretty good, despite being somewhat amateur-ish in comparison to what they would later write.
Like I said, with LaBrie on vocals, they are pretty great songs actually. But the key factors of poor production and a hard-to-listen-to singer make these songs less appealing.

No no, it is. Believe me, I've heard them many times before but never through laptop speakers.
