Which studio album would you pick?

Awake
Falling Into Infinity
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Train Of Thought
Systematic Chaos
Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Jamariquay

Train Of Thought. It'd fit in quite well as one-half of an Evening With set, it'd give the guys another chance to play the whole album through, and all the songs work really well in a live setting. Plus, it's a very fun album, and the band still seems to enjoy it quite a bit (which is a big deal).

As much as I'd love to see Awake I just can't bare the thought of how emotionless the band would play it, at least Jordan since he's obviously the most detached from the music itself.

What? The Awake performances on the Black Clouds tour were the highlight of every show they were played at, ESPECIALLY Mirror/Lie.

I'd love to see DT playing through Awake like they have other albums on their anniversary, sticking to the script mainly but also "modernizing" sections here and there. What I don't want to see is the band somberly playing the album note for note. Unfortunately, Mike seems to be in complete denial that Awake is just as special to fans as Images and Words or Scenes.

I see James LaBrie's voice is pretty close how it used to be Awake time. I think, this chance has to be used by band.

Awake, complete with all the layers of movie samples in "Space-Dye Vest" and a guest appearance by Kevin Moore -- or at least a digitally created version of KM on the movie screen behind the band.

The only way I'd want to see Space-Dyed Vest is if they did a modern, Rudessed-out version of it that pisses off all the purists.

Haha.  Yea, I think that would annoy me.  If they did play it with Jordan, this would one song I would want him to play almost note for note -- especially the beginning and ending parts.

Oh, I want him to play it note for note.

Honestly, I don't really have any desire to hear any more of their album played in their entirety for now.  Unless they do another concept album or a theme album with a strong enough theme that it makes sense, there isn't really much reason to do that.  With SFAM, it made perfect sense since it was a concept album.  For WDADU, it made sense because people are less familiar with it and they could introduce it to more fans, it was a way of doing a "do-over" with James on vocals, and it was the anniversary of their debut.  With I&W, it's cool that they played it.  Since it was really their breakthrough album, it kinda makes sense.  It's also not overly long compared to some of the later albums.  For TOT and 8VM, as much as I like those albums, I really have no desire to see them in their entirety at any one show, and the same holds true for any other album of theirs.  I would rather have a diverse set that focuses on new material from whatever album they are touring in support of with a good variety of other material.  So if there were a "none" option in the poll, that would be my pick.  If I had to pick one, it's a tough choice, and I can't really come up with a good enough justification for any of them.  I guess I'd pick BCSL since I haven't personally seen any of those songs live, but that's not really a good reason.  Six Degrees is tempting, but in reality, it's just WAY too long to sit through.  I'm stoked that we have two versions of the title song preserved on DVD releases, but the entire album would be way too much for one show.

If DT ever did SDV without Kevin, it would have to be played note for note. Not only would it enrage all the purists(I'm not one), but maybe it would open up the possibility of a lawsuit, maybe even played exactly as released. But the only thing I know about the legal system I've watched on Law & Order, so I don't know shit

No it wouldn't.  First off, DT holds the rights to the song.  Second, even if Kevin did have right to the song, anybody in the world can play it live and can modify their performance any way they see fit without violating the law.

Jarlaxle

Yeah I figured so. Are there any instances where a dispute like this could arise? Like when STP split up and Velvet Revolver started up, I heard that VR held the rights to play a few of the songs that STP wrote. I am probably way off again lol

bosk1

If they want to record and sell copies of it, they may or may not have to get Kev's signoff or may have to pay royalties, but it depends.

Jarlaxle

IMO playing it at a gig is completely different than releasing it on DVD and making cash on it, under these circumstances

Jarlaxle

Well of course it won't, but it is something to speculate about. It may not happen with DT, but it could happen elsewhere

Ben_Jamin

Falling Into Infinity with the songs left off and playing the demo versions of some songs, also having Derek be a guest playing Anna Lee.

Of course it is.  That's why I have explained, no they don't need his permission to play it, but they might if they released it for something they were selling.  And as the thread title says, "Pick one studio album to be performed/released live in it's entirety..."  So I don't get exactly what in my answer you are objecting to.

Jarlaxle

??? I'm not objecting to anything in your post. Basically I was agreeing with you

Mebert78

Not to derail the thread in a SDV discussion, but deep inside me I find it hard to believe that DT will go their entire career without ever performing SDV.  Will it be performed with or without Kevin?  Who knows.  I think he could eventually relent and perform at an anniversary show just when we've all given up hope of that happening, or I could also see the band playing it without him at an Awake anniversary show.  Either way, I think the song will be played at some point.

Considering MP picks what songs get played and he doesn't like SDV at all, I doubt it will get played unless Kevin joines them.

Why SDV is so important for everyone? I mean it's good song but that's all. I don't care if they play Awake without SDV. I still fall in love with the others.  :heart

It has nothing to do with how good the song is. It's just the circumstances surrounding it.

If it has a special allure because it's the only DT song that has never been played live.  (I think that's true).  Admittedly, it's a hit or miss song with a of fans.  Some people have it as their all-time fav DT song, while others hate it lol.

The only other DT songs that haven't been played live are "The Best of Times" and "The Shattered Fortress"

Only counting the songs released on official studio albums, of course.

Does anyone know which, if any, of the 5 FII B-Sides haven't been played live? I think it's just "Where Are You Now?" since "Raise The Knife" was released on SCORE, and the other 3 were played during the FII tour, specifically the Paris show (but unfortunately, were not released on OIALT). Also, "Don't Look Past Me" hasn't been played live.

And also, while not entirely relevant, does anyone know which of the 6 Majesty songs haven't been done live?

Why?  I find it very easy to believe.

Where Are You Now was performed live, if I'm not mistaken.  I think it's just Don't Look Past Me and SDV now.

Oh, okay! Then every song from FII + B-Sides have been performed live, even though some of those songs weren't played more than a dozen times. IIRC, "You Not Me" was only played a handful of times.
