Anyway, Dream Theater is just finishing their 2010 touring and shows, and they decide to go vacation in Aspen. While skiing, James LaBrie trips and tumbles down a hill. He hasn't broken any bones, but during the fall, his shrieking has caused him to once again rupture his vocal chords.

Dream Theater decides that they have to put their 11th studio album on hold until James is better, but they still want to please their fans. "Why not do an instrumental EP?", says Rudess. "It would be like a new Liquid Tension Experiment!". "I think", says Portnoy, "that we should let me do vocals on a few tracks and release them as an EP." "No!", says Petrucci. "You're a good singer, but you could never replace James's shoes." "Eh", says Myung.

Then John Petrucci gets a most excellent idea. "Why don't we release a five-track EP of our most famous songs, and for each individual track, we'll get a different vocalist from each of our favorite bands to sing?" "That's a splendid idea!" proclaims Mike. Rudess gets up and hops around "Oh boy oh boy oh boy I can't wait oh boy".

So, if you were given the option to hear any five vocalists to sing any five DT songs, what would you choose?

This is personally my pick:

1. Metropolis, pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper - Daniel Gildenlow on vocals
2. The Mirror - Geddy Lee on vocals
3. The Spirit Carries On - Mikael Akerfeldt doing clean vocals
4. The Dark Eternal Night - Mikael Akerfeldt doing death vocals
5. Honor Thy Father - Devin Townsend

You?

Learning to Live - Russell Allen
The Killing Hand - Daniel Gildenlow
Disappear - Steven Wilson
Home - Maynard James Keenan
Through Her Eyes - Tom Jones

Geddy Lee on "The Mirror?"  Loooooool...

Devy would be cool on Honor Thy Father though, might make the song listenable.  Maybe he could do "In the Name of God..." oh crap I need to change my pants, hang on.

I'll have to think on the other four but the one that springs to mind instantly is:

Bruce Dickinson - In the Name of God

:metal

DarkEternalNight

This Dying Soul - James Hetfield
Disappear - Maynard James Keenan
The Glass Prison - Layne Staley (if he were still alive) & Jerry Cantrell
The Shattered Fortress - David Draiman
The Dark Eternal Night - Phillip Anselmo

Dance of Eternity - Mike Patton
:lol :lol :lol

Trial of Tears - Jonas Renkse, without doubt my favourite idea, I give 110% it would be awesome in every way
In The Presence of Enemies - Bruce Dickinson, also totally agreed with In The Name of God
A Nightmare to Remember - Blaze Bayley, with a few changes here and there he would sound amazing in it
Space-Dye Vest - Vincent Cavanagh
Home, Voices or Pull Me Under - Daniel Gildenlow

From what I've heard from his singing and about him, I can in fact imagine it, but the whole idea made me laugh a bit. :P

robwebster

1. The Root of All Evil - Matt Bellamy
2. Surrounded - David Bowie
3. Lie - Chris Cornell
4. A Fortune in Lies - Roy Khan
5. In the Name of God - Mike Patton

It'd be a damn weird EP, but I'd pay good money for that.

I particularly think Matt Bellamy'd be damn good on the chorus to TROAE, and Mike Patton would do a fantastic job on the "Justifying violence, citing from the holy book..." section of In the Name of God. He could make that mindbogglingly sinister.

Jamesman42

1. The Count of Tuscany - Neal Morse
2. The Silent Man - Dustin Kensrue
\o\ lol /o/

I want to hear Frank Sinatra singing all of their songs. Especially Constant Motion. "Focus here, oh I'll focus there..."

Although, he doesn't really sing so much as talk really smugly.

You laugh, but it would be fucking epic.

I have severe doubts about anything including The Dance Of Eternity being epic (except maybe for the Instrumedley).

Really?

Mike Patton = Vocalist of Faith No More, well known for the radio hit entitled "Epic".

Sigz

 herp derp I r gud at moosic.

I really should just go to bed.

Gadough

I'm just surprised you didn't catch it because I thought you were a big Mike Patton fan.

Sigz

I am, but I'm more of a fan of his other stuff like Tomahawk and Fantomas rather than FNM.

contest_sanity

One that immediately jumps to mind is Matt Smith (Theocracy) singing "Learning To Live."  That F# would be epic!

I found the entire OP really funny, but somehow I didn't even catch that bit. Fantastic.

Mladen

I'll try my idea to be as diverse as possible.  :)

1. Constant Motion (Corey Taylor)
2. Strange deja vu (Bruce Dickinson)
3. Peruvian skies (Tim Ripper Owens)
4. Status seeker (Geddy Lee)
5. Another day (Jon Anderson)

I like that, but I'm putting Michael Kiske on Learning To Live, but I might put Matt Smith on Octavarium.

I wouldn't waste Michael Kiske on Wither. I bet Jeff Kieth (Tesla)would sound awesome on that.

I'm also thinking:

This Dying Soul- John Bush
Metropolis Pt 1- Ronnie James Dio
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

FlashCE

I'd be really interested in having Devin Townsend and Daniel Gildenlow sing the softer and most sensitive songs. Disappear, Vacant and Another Day for example. Daniel could pretty much slay every DT song though.

Adami

Devin Towsend would sound awesome on The Dark Eternal Night.
