Some fans asked a long time ago what did James do while the rest of DT were playing the songs' incredibly long instrumental breaks during concerts, and then the band (or the fans themselves, I don't know) made a joke saying that James always picks up a Shovel and starts digging holes during those breaks (James has also joked that he goes to the stage's kitchen and cooks some burgers :lol) then, the joke became a DT meme.
