Jordan Rudess is gonna have a field day with this. I can't wait to see what kind of music apps are developed.

Can you imagine heated arguments taking place over that thing? The guy's holding it in front of him, and the girl's face is in the viewscreen like a webcam. All the sudden he yells "DON'T TALK TO ME THAT WAY YOU WHORE!!!" and shakes the tablet around wildly like a little kid. And then, he hurls it across the room like a discuss. That's when you walk in the door and miraculously catch it. You look into the screen, she looks through her screen at you, and instant love is born. Hopefully the first guy will let you leave with his iPad. Just tell him it would have been broken anyway if you didn't catch it.

I can see this catching on. Let's face it guys; the vast majority of people use a computer for email, internet browsing, viewing/organizing pictures, watching videos, and playing some basic, time killing games. This is a slick, small computer that does exactly that without all of the extras they won't need. It's not a computer to do work on, it's a computer to kill time on, which is all most people do on their computers at home. The great thing about Apple is that it makes it's interface so damn easy to use. The average computer user doesn't give a crap about being able to manually organize their computer. They just want to push a button and get what they want. The only real drawback I see to this is the price. You can get a basic laptop which will do more for less.

For some reason (probably because it's been the subject of study around my school the the last week), my first thought was of the Isaac Newton apple.

It sure surprised him.

Does it come with a stand or something? If not, then it's considerably less convenient than a laptop as you need a wall to lean it against.

I'll pass up. Nothing that I need. Those who are willing to buy it, whatever their motives are, go ahead. Those who aren't, fine. I have what I need, so there's no need for me to buy this thing.

Me neither. But in my opinion, it might be an idea that might develop into something bigger in the future, with adapted/function-serving technology etc. But as of today, it's rather superfluous than really useful.

In any case, the only thing I can see this working as is as a netbook alternative.
Does this iPad come with a pen? Otherwise, who's gonna bother tipping class notes when you don't have a screen in front of you? Might as well break your neck.

If you are an artist, I can see this being handy to you (but if it has a pen), like the Cintiq. Elseways, what do you need this for? Are they gonna try to compete against Amazon for e-books?

Any guesses on when either Jobs or other people will say Apple keeps revolutionizing the industry even though tablets have been out for years?
Yes, unfortunately, this will happen as it has several times in the past. People who laughed at tablets and e-readers will suddenly think they're awesome, and that Apple invented the entire concept. They'll pay significantly higher prices for it, in spite of the cheaper competing products being just as good, if not better.

I can't imagine trying to type on a non-physical keyboard. I touchtype, and as anyone who touchtypes knows, it's pretty much impossible to do without tactile response.
Also, the name sounds like someone with a brain injury trying to say iPod.

I still think Maddox is right about all these stupid touch-screens. Nothing beats tactile response.

Agreed. I could never get an iTouch or an iPhone for that reason, let alone an iPad.

Also, this article seems to suggest that it will have phone capabilities.

Apple really should have seen this coming. I mean I can see the resemblance between POD and PAD, but someone must have snickered a little bit at the board meeting.

It's a modified iPhone OS. Many lulz ensued when I heard that.

So it sounds like Apple just released a version of the iPhone that's almost as big as a laptop, yet not as useful as one. Awesome.
The only benefit I see of this is the larger touchscreen, which will be great if they release some apps specifically for it. The iPhone has some apps that make great use of the touchscreen, but that screen is just too small to reach the full potential of the ideas people are trying to use it for.

I think it's got potential. Apple will iterate and make it better, quickly, and developers have a really interesting new plaything.

It's positioned a lot better than people seem to think too. Netbooks and e-readers like the Kindle have been pretty damn popular, and this looks about 50 billion times better than both.

Apple haters are lame. "Oh no, they make popular products and the media likes to cover them. Let's dismiss everything they do out of hand!"

The name is fucking awful though.
