Alestorm - sorry can't stand them, they are a joke band that is not funny at all.
Ensiferum - Great band been around for ages, folk, epic and progressive.
Wintersun - Only one album, but what an album, from the former Ensiferum mastermind.

Best of all are Moonsorrow.
Every album is different, they have a huge sound, long progressive songs, with black/folk/viking influences.
The vocals are harsh and in Finnish, but for me there are the ultimate band of any extreme genre you care to name :)

Turisas is my favorite pirate/viking/folk metal band.  Their albums tend to have longer listening lifetimes for me.

Amon Amarth's Twilight of the Thunder God Radio Disney version. The thing is, it's awesome.

I really don't understand how someone could not find Alestorm at least mildly amusing.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME SHIT AHHHHHH

Necro bump just to say that I'm listening to Turisas for the first time in a while. God I love this band! They are just the pinnacle of Viking/Battle metal as far as I'm concerned  :metal

I'll settle for "Pirates" by ELP, and "I Am A Viking" by Yngwie.

I wanted to open the Big Folk Metal Thread and everything in between, but I guess we can use this one  ;D

I was curious to see how many folk metallers there were around here.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

I saw them live in June, at an italian festival in Milan.

Two days before the show, the bassist got sick... they had to found a replacement with such a short notice and no rehersals.
The day before the show, the german flight company lost them the baggage... they asked Ensiferum which were on the bill as well to lend them their instruments, and asked for fans on Facebook if they could bring some stuff to create the face and body paint (they did).
The day of the show, the violinist boarded a different plane that had to return back because a bird got stuck into the engines, which is the moment probably any sane band would give up... but not Turisas!

So, with a stand-in bassist, makeup borrowed from fans and the violinist on a late flight, they started the show ON TIME, with the singer explaining the situation and saying they would wait for the violinist, "maybe he arrives at the next song, maybe at the last, we don't know"... eventually he arrived during the fourth song, halfway through the song he ran on stage having JUST arrived from the airport and being driven directly to the gig. Just imagine the roar when he came on stage, I totally picture him finally arriving all of a rush backstage, taking some seconds to figure out which song they were playing, and rushing on stage to join along.

They were HEROES. I have the utmost respect for them after all the shit they've been through that did not stop them, there are bands that would cancel a show for half of the bad luck they had.

I casually enjoy the music.

My favourites include:

Ensiferum - Iron
Týr – Valkyrja
Elvenking - Pagan Manifesto
Korpikaani - Tales Along This Road
Turisas - Stand Up and Fight

I am also really having a blast with the latest Alestorm, No Grave But the Sea, nothing new but possibly their best album for me personally.

Elvenking - Pagan Manifesto

Glad to see some appreciation for the guys! I love them, and I think their latest two albums, Era and  in facts The Pagan Manifesto, are fantastic - not that what came before was bad of course. I know them, it's exagerated to call them friends but by know where's on "What's up dude" terms, I always try and see them when they play in northern Italy.

They're about to release in a month their new album, Secrets of the Magick Grimoire - it looks like it's gonna be very dark, heavy and atmospheric! Snowy Shaw is a guest vocalist on the longest song of the album.

I love several bands in the genre, they're really fun. I really like Alestorm, Turisas, Tyr, Arkona, Ensiferum. I'm fairly new to the these kind of bands but I really like what I'm discovering. I love the folky melodies, I like the usual catchyness and epicness of them.

I was going to see Alestorm in Mexico next month with my wife (she likes them aswell) but we may have to skip it because of money being pretty tight these days.

Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God (Official Live Video)

Always nice with a "Nordic punch in the face" right before the weekend.

Did nobody mention Finntroll? Fantastic mashup of metal, Nordic folk and some finnish polka-thing (think they call it "Humppa"). So upbeat you can dance to it! Nevermind the lyrics though..  :lol

Never been able to get into AA, they just don't do anything for me at all.

Check out Equillibrium from Germany (native lyrics), they are one of my faves.

Bro check out Twilight of the Thunder God if you haven't already. If that dosen't make you go out into the thunderstorm bare chested and raise your fist to the sky and scream to the gods of metal then they're simply not for you and that's ok.  :P

I would say that Mike Lepond's "Silent Assassins" would definitively qualify for Viking metal meets raw classic metal with a fresh twist.  Insane bass playing on both albums and awesome guitar and vocals throughout.  I can't get enough of those albums!   :metal :metal

I can't stand Joacim's vocals though, kind of ruined the feel of the song imo.

I can't get theses songs out of my head, especially the choruses.

To the Skies and Beyond
Brothers Unite

It's so cheesy but man it's catchy!  :tup
