West Boylston Reservoir. Really nice area with a bunch of trails around it. There is supposedly the remains of a town underneath the water.

LN you really are such a great photographer! Same can be said about a few people in here (7SB, kari, etc) but for me yours just about stand out from the rest! :)

I really need to get myself a good camera.
It means a lot to me that you think so. Thank you very much. :)

Do you mean a good camera as in a system camera, or just a good compact camera?

A system camera really, something I can do something more exciting with, particularly when it comes to focus!

You won't regret buying one. At least if you have the patience to learn to use it properly - my boyfriend got one and then completely stopped photographing because he didn't learn to use it. He had had it for like half a year and still didn't know how to change the shutter speed...
On the other hand, if you do learn to use it properly, photographing becomes so much funnier. No more point-and-shoot only, every shot requires thinking. When I got mine I started out with "cheating" a lot and only using the automatic settings, but then I learned how to set them manually and everything was improved. The quality became better and I could create different "moods" in the pictures depending on light and such. Photographing was much more entertaining than before.

I use a Canon EOS 450D, and I love it - it's a beginner's camera that has every basic function and a bit more. For me it has no drawbacks, it's easy to use and I don't need anything more advanced, so it's perfect for me. I recommend it strongly, but of course you may be looking for something else. And be sure to get a tripod along with it, it's very handy when photographing in the dark. I can't believe I managed to survive an entire year without. You miss so many opportunities without it.

I have a Nikon D3000, their entry-level DSLR, and I absolutely love it. It's a pretty inexpensive way to be able to access the plethora of great Nikkor lenses. The system is very good too. Of course they had to pull a few things to get the price down (IE no video capture, but your a photographer! It's not a necessity), but for all intents and purposes it's pretty much the same as their other cameras.

My ultimate advice though is to completely forget about mega-pixles and specs. Go to the shop, try out different brands, and find which is the most comfortable to hold. I can't stress that enough. I almost bought the Pentax K-x till I went into the shop and found it was very unconfortable, whereas the Nikon was far better. Of course do the research and find the model with the best reviews, but when it comes down to a couple of choices, just go the one that feels better. Because you will be spending a lot of time holding it!

Yes, the grip (?) is very important, and from what I've heard Nikon cameras are extra good at those. But on the other hand I find my Canon much more comfortable than my boyfriend's Nikon D40, so be sure to try different brands, because I guess it's very individual.

aarich, nice stuff but are you using any photo editing software?  If you are it seems like you are crushing your blacks down too far and you are losing all your information in the shadow ranges.  If not, you may have some weird settings on your camera selected.  Something to think about.

EDIT:  There may be nothing wrong with them at all, I am actually looking on a really crappy monitor right now.  I will check back when I get home for a real assessment on a nice monitor.
If anyone in this thread judge him; heyy James WTF? about you in Awake In Japan? Then I will say; WTF about you silly?

I use Photoshop to add more contrast and tweak some of the levels a bit. On the whole I like it as it makes the photos a lot more vibrant than they come out, although looking back I think I may have gone a bit far with the third pic in the post above. Thanks for the advice though! Part of why I want to get a decent camera is to have one that is better over a bigger range of illumination (the compact one I use is useless in the dark and looks lifeless in the sunlight, which is why I edit most of my photos) so I don't need to edit them nearly as much!

I do find PS not that great though. Any recommendation on better software to use?

Hey man,  Finally back home on my good monitor.  (The one at work crushes the shit outta blacks which I totally forgot about when I made that post.)  Your shit looks great man, no criticism on the black levels anymore.  You are doing exactly what you are supposed to do for color correcting photos  :tup  I use Adobe Lightroom 3 to edit my photos.  It's a great program for if you shoot RAW images.  Its non destructive editing, there is no saving involved, and it has great tools for organizing photos and exporting them and stuff like that.  It's basically photoshop but for photographers and not compositors/designers.

Wow Ariich, nice pics! I like the second-to-last one with the flower. The color has a nice vibrant contrast and I like the detail with the dew drops on it. Excellent job.  :tup

Thanks guys. :D Might see if there's a trial version of Lightroom that I can have a go with, sounds like it might be more suitable for photo editing!

I'm also proud of this one. Cropped it, increased the contrast and brightness and finally sharpened it. Looks fantasy-ish, which is what I was going for

So I traded in my old Canon EF 2x Extender...

... for the new EF 2x II Extender. Now I get slightly faster focusing speed and slightly sharper images.

At our little spot by the woods in front of a lake Volk noticed some butterflies that were having a suspiciously good time.  :|

Naturally I took some pictures...

I took this one last Tuesday. I wish I had a good camera, but I only had the one from my cell phone. Feels low-res, man.
