Hey guys. I'm just starting to get into photography, so I'm actually going to start following these threads I've seen for years! I don't have much to show yet, I've been reading a lot the past few weeks mainly because I haven't had the time to actually go out and shoot anything. I got my first camera and new lens recently. I hope to mainly get competent at portraiture stuff to compliment my hobby of cosplaying and such. There's some awesome stuff from you guys here!

/blog post.

What did you go with for a camera and lens?

I got a Nikon d3400. I love it so far. It's light and great for a starter camera! Other than the kit lens, I bought a f/1.8 50mm and just ordered a f/1.8 35mm because they were relatively cheap.

That's a great Intro camera!  Mine was the D90.  Solid lens choices too.  One of the biggest factors of DSLR photography is the quality of the lenses you use.  Understanding budget is a concern, really research your lens choices before buying.  Some are just utter garbage and you will hate the quality of the images they produce.

Yeah, I got the 50mm even though it's a full body lens and my camera is a crop body because it was the same price as other DX lenses and not 2-3x more expensive like the other FX equivalents. Plus I know FX lenses are a bit higher quality too. So I thought that was well worth it especially if I upgrade to a full frame one day.

I might get a zoom lens in the future, but that's not high up on my priority list right now based on what I'm interested in shooting.

My only complaint about the camera is that it doesn't support a shutter release cord. I wanted to try out some astrophotography some time, so it looks like I just have to be extra steady when I push the button. :lol

First time trying to do a nice panorama. Next time I think I'll use a lower vantage point. I used the kit lens for the wide angle, so unfortunately I didn't have a hood on it. There are few noticeable bits of glare/hazing, but I think it's alright after a bit of processing. It's a little compressed, but can you view at a higher res if you open it in another window.

As far as the shutter release...  I'll have to research it but... I would think the IR remote shutter units available would work with it, like they do for my older D90.

Yeah, I have one of those. I've heard they don't work as well since you have to be in front of the camera or something, but I'll have to try it out!

I have this version from amazon and it works great with my D5200.

I've taken pictures from a distance with no problems.

I don't know if the D3400 has this but in the menu system of my D5200 I have a interval timer that I use. You can take timelapse pictures using that esp with astrophotography

Could anyone with knowledge of cameras give me some advice on a camera. I had mentioned to a friend that I was looking to get a good starter camera for travelling and whatnot, and they sent me this link. They aren't a big photography buff, so I wanted an opinion from someone who knows their stuff when it comes to cameras:

https://www.costco.ca/Canon-EOS-M10-EF-M-15-45mm-IS-STM-18.0-MP-DSLR-Camera-with-Canon-EF-M-Mount-Adapter.product.100358226.html

Would this be a good intro camera? I literally have little to no knowledge of them myself, other than 18 MP is more than my Samsung S7.  :lol From what I gather it is still more of a "point and shoot" camera, but being able to put other lenses on it is nice, so I won't be stuck reading manuals for weeks trying to figure out the intricacies of a more professional camera.

If this isn't a good camera, can you recommend another camera in a similar price range that would be a better starting point for a noob like me?

One advantage with this Canon is, you could change lenses, and this could be a huge advantage down the road for you. It is a decent camera, but you'd better learn about some photography basics before trying it out... sure, you could switch it to the fully auto mode or the "Program" mode, in which you have some controls over shutter speed or aperture or what not. Still, those things won't mean jack to you if you don't invest a little time in picking up the basics.

As for that kit lens, it is acceptably fast wide open; but at f/6.3 when zoomed in, it is quite slow unless you are shooting outdoor under bright sunlight. All in all, go for it if you really want a starter camera and if it is within your budget. Or, you could also check out other point-and-shoot ones by Sony (RX100 series) or Ricoh (GR series), and see if they work out better for you. Quality-wise they all make pretty good cameras, and they all product better than decent images.

I am back! Yes, I was on vacation in Hokkaido, Japan the entire last week. Anyway, I will share some photos here later, but first, here is a little video clip I shot of Mt.Yotei on one early morning, enjoy.  :D

Sorry for the slight movement in the video. It was all handheld with a 70-200mm L f/2.8 IS lens... it was heavy and I tried my best to eliminate movement as much as possible without a tripod.  :facepalm:

@Azyiu - That's beautiful!

@FlyingBIZKIT - Such a good looking dog.

@Mirrormask - That's a wonderful landscape. I wish I could see views like that IRL more often.

I didn't intend to be taking pictures of wildlife, but I love taking pics of this bird.

I bet it would look even cooler in a different way if the camera angle is any lower.  :hat

Tokyo is an interesting city, but personally I prefer the Japanese countryside better. The north island of Hokkaido is one of my fav places to visit.
