Thanks!  I really want to do more night time shots.  Unfortunately, conditions in Los Angeles aren't really conducive to it.

Some of you may have heard of the so-called Umbrella Revolution that is going on in Hong Kong. This movement has been nothing but very peaceful, and here are some sight from yesterday (the 4th day):

:moon:
Can you share your settings?

I have a Nikon D3100 and an old 70-210mm F/4-5.6 lens from my Nikon 8008 film camera.  On my D3100, it's effectively a ~100-300mm lens.  I figure 300mm is a reasonable focal length for moon shots.  With f/11, 1/300-1/500 and 200-400 ISO, my exposure is fine, but the moon is very blurry.  I don't think it is camera shake, because 1/300-1/500 should be fast enough even with a 300mm lens, and I've used a small tripod with the same results.

Of course. I used a Canon 5D Mark III for that shot, and my settings are as follows:

1/640 sec
f/11
ISO 400

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Ok, I've been feeling lazy in posting anything lately... just a few random shots I took during my trip to Hokkaido, Japan back in mid-Oct. Hope they don't suck too bad for you guys, enjoy. ;)

Suck? Not at all, man! They're quite good. I'm especially fond of the sign with the stars. Nice punchy contrast and angle. The monk shot reminds me of being in Japan and the patience of them. Chaotic traffic all around while he patiently waits for coins to drop. The Toya sunrise shot is good. I'm liking the low contrast and shadow clipping. It gives the feeling of early days and just waking up where everything isn't quite yet in focus. Tranquility, too. Morning Toya is good, too. Love the clouds.

Thanks for your kind words!  :hefdaddy

Yeah, that was what I was aiming for in that monk shot. He was just standing there soooo damn patiently. And I thought I just HAVE to capture that feeling!!

I got the sunrise shot by luck in a way. I was not planning to do it whatsoever!! Yet for whatever reasons I woke up at 5am that morning. I immediately check the weather report, and found out the sun would come up at around 5:50am or so. So I gathered myself (kind of forced myself to leave the warm bed) and took off to the shore. Though very cold (around -3'C) the weather was perfect!!

The early morning hours in the Lake Toya area during the Fall season is just beautiful! The wind was blowing in high attitude that causes those clouds to appear the way they look. In some way that helps making the shot looking like it was exposed longer that it really was.

For the star shot. I originally wanted to do a longer exposure, but the surrounding street lights were strong enough to affect my shots if I go any longer. That was pretty much the best (with little prior star shooting experience) I could do at this time.

Again, many thanks for your kind words!!  :hefdaddy

I've been really going with creating that style of look in all of my photos recently. It's just been the style I've been rolling with it. I like it a lot! It's kind of like creating a film look on digital.

I am going with the old Fuji film look myself with lower temp color and a touch of a green tilt in my recent photos.

I just upgraded to the Canon 16-35mm L f/2.8 II, and I guess it is time to salute my trusted 17-40mm L f/4 that, served me very well over the past 6 years; and traveled around the world with me during that time, thank you!

As an absolutely newbie to the world of photography I'm thinking of picking up an entry level DSLR and making a hobby out of it. After a little bit of research I'm leaning towards a Nikon D3300 since $500 is about my limit. I really like a lot of the sample shots I'm seeing. I'd go Canon as an alternative but it seems the SL1 is considered a little less robust as the D3300.

IMHO, either camera is good for beginners. Personally I like Canon's picture quality, and overall tone better though.

Ended up getting the D3300. Any good guides or tips to help get used to a camera? I understand what all these manual controls do but it's more getting used to how they go together. I was just going to go out and experiment.

I would probably try to do "extreme" shots, to familiarize yourself with the different aspects. E.g. take super-bright photos, super-dark ones, closeups etc.

Look up the basics on the internet, and then just keep shooting! Meanwhile, keep checking out other photographers' photos; and soon enough you will find a style you like. From there onward, just try to perfect your technique and all. That's all it.  :hat
