Evergrey thread.
« on: December 13, 2009, 08:35:19 PM »
Evergrey! One of the best bands of the modern age as far as I'm concerned. With stunning virtuosity, raw emotion, poetic lyrics, ad Tom Englund's powerful voice, they've crafted some pretty amazing albums, my personal favorite being "In Search of Truth." I'd say everything they've done so far has been excellent, with perhaps the exception of "Monday Morning Apocalypse," which is still a good record.

I'm not sure how many fans are out there, but if you haven't listened to them, you're missing out on some great stuff:

Definitely an awesome band. I consider myself a fan, though I only have one album (The Inner Circle). Amazing album though.

That was my first. From then on, I decided that I had to own every album they made. First it's one album, then it's the whole catalogue. Then it's a shrine you keep of Tom Englund in your closet.

I really like Evergrey's music, but can only listen to Englund's vocals for so long. It's not that I dislike his sound, but after half an album, the vocals start to sound all the same, and I feel like my ears need a break. I like his work with Ayreon though, but that obviously isn't a whole album worth of him, and it's a different style of music.

A really cool band, I saw them life about a year and a half ago, and it was a lot of fun. Some of my favorite songs: Ambassador, Rulers of the mind, As I lie here bleeding, A touch of blessing, The Essence of conviction etc.

Evergrey and Ice Age were the two bands I first branched out from Dream Theater with.  Evergrey sort of lost me a few years ago with Monday Morning Apocalypse, but they have some fantastic albums and a great sound.

I listen to them on a regular basis. When I'm in the mood, it's totally ace.

My top Evergrey albums are definately Recreation Day, The Inner Circle and In Search of Truth.

Monday Morning Apocalypse has a few good tracks, and Torn isn't that bad either. It's not as genius as their older stuff though. There is something missing, and nowadays it all seems to go about the 'heavy riff' and the 'emotional chorus'. The older albums have them too, but not as forced AND the compositions are a bit more thought out.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Englund's voice is godly! :tup

The Inner Circle is one of my favourite albums, and Recreation Day is damn great as well. The rest range from very good to ok.

Recreation Day and ISFT are Godlike.  Some of the best prog metal, and the guitar solos are bliss.  Although their last album was quite disappointing IMO.  Monday Morning was better than it was made out.

New album next year! Can't wait.  ;D

They have a few previews of the new songs on their website.

I hate the artwork, but I'm sure I'll cope:

Here are the official song titles:

Leave It Behind Us * You * Wrong * Frozen * Restoring The Loss * To Fit The Mold * Out Of Reach * The Phantom Letters * The Disease … * It Comes From Within * Free * I´m Drowning Alone * … And The Distance * … And The Distance (Carina Bonustrack)

Love Evergrey!

Along side Iced Earth, Nevermore and Kamelot, I consider them one of the template bands for the sort of music I wanna write and perform.
I personally really dig that new cover.

Looking forward to this new album.  Personally love the cover myself.  Here's the new bands lineup, very different.  It's gonna be interesting to see how this sounds especially with Henrik gone, his guitar playing was a staple of Evergrey's sound.

Tom S. Englund
Rikard Zander
Marcus Jidell
Johan Niemann
Hannes Van Dahl

Only Tom and Rikard left.

Something about the way the title is written on the album cover just kills it for me... IDK. I might warm up to it eventually.

Evergrey basically has revolving door musicians, aside from Tom. It kinda reminds me of how Opeth has solely become the song ideas and crafts of Mikael, but Evergrey seem more chaotic with their lineup changes.

I hope that doesn't mean you are letting anal bum cover an album cover decide whether or not you are going to buy or listen to the album

Just listened to the whole thing!!

Absolutely awesome. It combines the best of the old with the best of the new. Torn was a huge improvement over Monday Morning Apocalypse (which I still really liked), and Glorious Collision continues the trend. And Rikard's keys are finally at the forefront again. He was utilized a lot more in Torn after being minimized in MMA, but it really feels like the good ol' days this time around. As usual, the guitars and rhythm sections kick ass. Marcus, Johan, and Hannes fit right in.

It's probably more diverse than their previous 2 albums, with a few ballad-ish songs, and a few stabs at a little more experimentation. Of course, as expected, all of the songs are flooded with delicious melodies.

The lyrics are still very emotionally dark and introspective. It'd be hard to name some without naming them all, but the one that really struck a chord with me was The Phantom Letters  :sadpanda: You'll see what I mean when you listen to it.

I'd probably rank their albums like this:

Recreation Day
The Inner Circle
In Search of Truth
Solitude Dominance Tragedy/Glorious Collision (at a tie right now. Should change eventually)
Torn
The Dark Discovery
Monday Morning Apocalypse

Overall, this is easily a strong contender for the best album of 2011. I couldn't be happier with it.  ;D

Good to know. Torn wasn't amazing but was good and definitely a return to form after MMA. I don't think they'll ever top The Inner Circle though, that's one of my favourite albums of all time.

Good to hear ravenheart.  The new single, Wrong is the only song I've heard and I really like that one.  I guess I'm the only person that liked MMA, I think that was a fantastic album and so much better than Torn.  Torn IMO, was a disappointment.

Well, I like MMA fine. It has a few really great songs (Closure is in my top 10), but it stands out to me as their least memorable album. Torn was a big step up, and GC is even better. I'd say this is definitely their "return to form," so to speak. But I might be wrong. Listen to it and find out.  ;)

The album's a pleasant surprise. Not a single bad song, although I would cut a couple of tracks. Some of my favorites: Wrong, It comes from within, You, The Phantom letters...
