Yeah I'm definitely a casual AIC fan; and I feel just about the same regarding Nirvana. That said, I've never, ever considered the two alike in any way. In fact, before I was poisoned by the labels of genres, which I now kind of hate the entire concept of, I thought of them as almost opposites. Nirvana had songs that could put me to in a kind of...drone state of just getting lost in the music, and then wake me up with some very angst-ridden choruses. AIC did the same, but almost exactly opposite in that they were mostly angst and hardcore and sludgy and then had moments of bliss and comfort.

I dunno, that's my own take on it; and I haven't heard all of the songs from either band by the bye, so this is a very casual fan's take on both. But from the songs I've heard (assume I've heard all of the popular ones along with some of their beginning material that is perhaps lesser known or less popular), this is my naive little opinion...just a bit of a cautionary before some avid fan of either band rapes my facehole to shut me up because I've labeled them wrongly or have described what they consider to be a poor description of the music... Another disclaimer: I'm drunk and I don't give a fuck about shit. That shit I took. I'm not even going to flush it cause I'm paying homage to Earth. So fuck, man. Just fuck.

I'm still just listening to Hollow. Stone was alright, I didn't much care for it to be honest though, I just really wanted to like it. Haven't heard Phantom Limb but the name sounds awesome especially cause METALGEARSOLIDFIVEOMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

They're a metal band trying to imitate King's X and have as much as said so repeatedly. AIC and Nirvana have as much in common as dolphins and airplanes.

The Jets and Dolphins are both AFC East teams?

Word. Not to pile on here or insinuate that they never said that, but I've never heard anyone mention this before and I've been a fan since '96. Link please?

I've been a fan since late 1992/early 1993 and I don't think that EVER came up on the old Jerry Cantrell board (if it did, I probably missed it).

I seem to recall King's X possibly being mentioned as an influence, but I've never heard anything as strong as "imitate."

Interestingly enough, Dime said King's X influenced the clean tone arpeggio part for Cemetery Gates' verse.

It was in Guitar World several years ago.

This was the best I could do on short notice:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimebag_Darrell#Influences_and_guitar_skills

Quote from: wikipedia
Dimebag mentioned in an interview with Guitar World that the clean chord passages in the intro to Cemetery Gates were influenced by the clean chordal passages found in much of Ty Tabor's (King's X) playing.

Hard to be an influence when King's X's first album came out in 88 and AIC in 90.  AIC had their distinct sound right out of the gate.  I am a fan of both bands but I think the influence came from somewhere else.

It was a hodgepodge of a lot of different styles/musical influences.  Jerry said that a lot of the weird harmonies between him and Layne came from Jerry's love of Gregorian chords in his choir days, and Jerry was also a fan of a lot of different music - country, classic rock, etc.

As far as nailing everything down?  Yeah, that hasn't happened since the band's salad days back in the 90s. :lol

I remember an interview with the band (I think it was at a waterpark on Headbangers Ball), and they were asked about a new album.  I think it was Cantrelll's response, "We are waiting for the next Kings X album to see what they do".
I always took that as a joke yes, but also as a show of respect for Kings X.
Oh shit, you're right!

Just finished my first listen. It's amazing as I expected, but since there's a lot of long, relatively samey songs it does feel like more of a grower than the last one. I also hoped there would have been more of Duvall singing, but it doesn't detract a whole lot from the album and Cantrell is a great singer.

Highlights so far include Hollow, Stone, Phantom Limb, Pretty Done, Lab Monkey, and Voices.

I'll probably give it an overall score after a few more listens.
