Angra appreciation thread
« on: November 16, 2009, 06:48:01 PM »
I can't believe, given that this is a DT forum, that there has been no love for Angra being tossed around.  A fantastic progressive/power metal band hailing from Brazil, they incorporate Latin music with incredibly proficient technical guitar work for a crazy and somewhat addictive listening experience.

Also, KIKO LOUREIRO! is one of the best guitarists ever, but is almost never brought up due to Angra's virtually non-existent fanbase in North America.

Discuss.

Fan here.

Their music is great. I love Temple of Shadows, and i was reading some news and i don't know if replacing Aquiles (an awesome drummer) will work for the next album.

I'd suggest getting Temple of Shadows immediately.  Holy Land doesn't have anything on it.

In fact, I'd say that their Matos era stuff is a lot more inconsistent then the post-Matos work.  Their last three albums (Rebirth, Temple of Shadows, and Aurora Consurgens, as well as the EP Hunters and Prey) have all been excellent, but their first couple are split heavily between great tracks and mediocre tracks.

I love Angra.  Temple of Shadows is definitely my favorite album.

I got my brother in law into this band, after he became disenchanted with the fact that Dragonforce plays like shit live.  I played him Sonata Arctica and Angra, and now his love for power metal is renewed
I don’t know what to put here anymore

I am glad that I'm not alone in thinking Temple of Shadows is their best album. I think it's an absolute masterpiece, and it gives me chills every time I hear it. I also think Angels Cry and Rebirth are particularly strong.
As far as sophisticated, catchy, and emotional power metal goes, it doesn't get much better than Angra. I hope they will return someday!

I have no excuse for only owning one Angra album.  I will remedy this soon.

I've been listening to them for a few years. I really like Temple of Shadows and Aurora Consergens. Felipe Andreoli (sp?) is such a great bass player, and Kiko on guitar. And I really like the singer.

I can't stand Temple of Shadows and Aurora Consergens but 'Rebirth' is such a great album. I love the track 'Unholy Wars'. Definately one of their best tracks.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Holy Land is a nice album, but the other two Matos ones are somewhat less interesting. Their music really improved when Falaschi joined, his voice has a lot more power and the musical style changed to match that. Their latest album was a bit of a step down, but Temple of Shadows is easily one of my favourite power metal albums!

Temple of Shadows is definitely their best album. One of the best albums of that genre.

EDIT: This thread made me want to listen to Spread Your Fire. Such a catchy good song.

Such an underrated band, I love em.

Check out a song from their new album.  Has quite a Angels Cry/Holy Land vibe.

I'm not real big on covers, but they do one of the best covers of "Kashmir" I've ever heard!!  They are tremendous!

I finally got a copy of Temple of Shadows recently.  It is an amazing album.  Waiting Silence is the best song on it, but they're all great  :hat

I was really happy with Aqua, but it's not a heavy album whatsoever so I can see many metalheads being disappointed. Half of the tracks are ballads, but I think songs like "Ashes," "Spirit of the Air," and "Lease of Life," rank among their most beautiful material. And "Weakness of a Man" and "Awake from Darkness" are extremely fun and catchy. It's an interesting follow-up to the dark and aggressive Aurora Consergens.

Waiting Silence is easily a top 3 Angra song, it is simply amazing!!

Yeah, Aqua was no where near as bad as what the reviews made it out to be.  I didn't mind it actually.  Definitely a 180 to Aurora Consergens, which by the way was brilliant.

I'm going to be the one that goes against the stream and say I like the Matos era a lot better. I love Angel's cry and Fireworks. I really like the new era lot, great albums, great songs, but the first 3 are my favorite. Also the Painkiller cover kicks ass!

Amazing band. Temple of Shadows is one of my favorite albums ever and Holy Land gets a pretty high spot too in my book.

One of my big complaints is Angra live, though. Edu's not a good live singer  :lol I saw them live and lots of live videos and the man just doesn't get it right. He can't seem to be in tone most of the time.

Andre Matos, on the other hand...  :hat

I disagree here. I saw them live with Edu and he did a really good job. He was not able to hit every note though. For what I've seen from videos, Matos is not that good live. Then again, I might have seen different videos than you.

Maybe he has gotten better. Then again, I saw them in the Temple of Shadows tour which was a few years ago. I really hope he has gotten better.

I remember loving Unholy Wars since the first moment I heard it (the live DVD version).

Rebirth is such a good album, but definitely not on par with Holy Land or Temple of Shadows IMO.

for me, Aqua perhaps their most dissapponting album. well, after 3 years of hiatus, lot of fans expecting more "rockin'" album after AC's released. but Aqua is quite nice stuff. IMO.
