Just gonna throw this out there, Across The Rainbow Bridge is the best song on at least Disc 1 of Into The Electric Castle musically. No one ever talks about it. It's always about Isis and Osiris (great song) or Amazing Flight (meh).

Except for a bunch of songs.

Such as? 01 has other good songs, but not in comparison. Sixth Extinction or Unnatural Selection would probably be 2nd.

Edit: That one segment at 8:50 of the Fifth Extinction is the best moment of the album. ("And as the smoke slowly rises...")

I think 01 is stronger on the whole, and has more strong songs and less filler, but it's a matter of opinion.

I agree, and I know at least Nick does.  Time Beyond Time is really close for me, though.

2. He does NOT consider 01 his best work, even though it's his newest and that attitude is expected of musicians, an interesting bit of honesty there.

Did he mention what he considers his best work?

No, however he did go into why he doesn't think 01 is, or at least one of the reasons was because there were too many singers and it kept him from using each singer to the extent that he would have liked. This was a driving factor behind Guilt Machine being such a small project.

I think the number of singers on THE was just right and everyone was used perfectly. Any less than that and I think it would not be as good. He definitely didn't use Gildenlol, Jonas, Englund, Floor Jansen and Ty as much as he could.

I just randomly ended up listening to the trailer of Guilt Machine. Wow, zero enjoyment, seriously.

Relistened to Human Equation and 01 today, always so good. The minimal weak spots are always covered and flow so well....

On that note, would there be any interest in an Ayreon survivor?

Final Experiment's up. I'll decide how long to leave it up based on the votes.

Thread revival.

Does anyone know in what order the Ayreon plot goes in? It doesn't seem very clear to me.

There is a basic timeline included in the Ayreon 3CD/1DVD set, appropriately called Timeline, but hell if I am going to try and recreate it here :)

I have been listening to this Ayreon set more lately and I still don’t know what to make of it. Admittedly it is a lot to take in and a compilation might not be the best way to do it. I’m not a huge lyrical-analyst, so the oft-discussed cheesiness of the lyrics/themes don’t bother me. I don’t even have any remote idea what the hell is going in the Ayreon saga. But I don’t care.

There seems to be lots of good music there, but nothing that really grabs me. It makes for pleasant listening at work, but a few songs will go by and I will think back and not remember anything about what I just heard. Normally after this many listens I’ve made some sort of decision on how I feel about the music, good or bad.

I guess I could try to explain it tomorrow if it's the story you want. It will take a while, though  :lol

I feel this of all pre THE albums. I was just listening to the electric castle and *nothing* stood out to me.

But THE and 01011001 are immediate 'wow'ers to me.

I know the story, I was just wondering which order the albums go in. I was assuming that it was chronological, but I also think that the Universal Migrator albums might take place after 01.

The Final Experiment takes place in medieval King Arthurian times.
Actual Fantasy isn't related to the plot.
Electric Castle takes place at an undisclosed time after the birth of humanity but before 2084.
Universal Migrator takes place shortly after the near extinction of mankind in 2084 (ie: in 2085).
The Human Equation takes place sometime in modern times.
01011001 takes place in a range of times from before the birth of humanity and ends in 2085.

Also, The Electric Castle's survivor will begin near the start of next week, get those listens in.

I'm partial to THE and 01 over the rest of Ayreon's stuff, personally, but I know alot of people love Electric Castle.

EDIT: Migrator technically takes place after 01 ends as 01 ends with the Forevers discussing the colonist/futureman (the last man alive), and his future fate with the Dream Sequencer.

01 is sort of how everything comes full-circle. Chronologically, it's after it, yet all over the place.

01 is almost as amazing as THE. It's a little more metallic, with some vocalists that aren't OMG AMAZING but get the job done. I like Universal Migrator, but disc 1 is better than disc 2. Some great songs on that one. Into the Electric Castle has some real gems, (Across the Rainbow Bridge, Cosmic Fusion) but it has some filler too. The Final Experiment is pretty good too. Eyes of Time is one of my favorite Ayreon songs.

Dunno why it took me so long to check out star one, given that I LOVE the human equation, into the electric castle, 01011010 (or whatever it is called) and im a big fan of russell allen!

Quite cheesey and ott space themes, but I'm liking what I've heard. Especially the live stuff.

The Human Equation takes place sometime in modern times.

Don't you think the dream sequencer part is actually a Forever, which is why it says
"emotions, I remember."

Yeah, the Human Equation *SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS* is just a machine induced dream, so technically it has no time frame, except for the end part where we find it all took place in an experiment.

I think it was a Forever saying "Emotions, I remember". The Forevers aren't a part of the Dream Sequencer though. They just built it if I recall correctly.

Right, but it also said "Dream Sequencer offline." which means that Forever used the Dream Sequencer to experience the entire thing. It's also the same Forever from Electric Castle.

Sixth Extinction
Confrontation

Make it happen.
Also to whoever says the Guilt Machine album is meh: Yeah a lot of it is. But Season of Denial and Perfection? alone are probably worth the money by themselves.

Personally I like Twisted Coil the best, the second half of the song is quite good. The singer sounds way too much like Matt Bellamy of Muse at times.

Listening to 01011001, Anneke van Giersbergen's voice makes me want to unleash a state of anarchy in her anneke.
