First song is on their myspace. Not bad so far. Drums are cool.

However, some of these vocal melodies seem pretty freakin similar (almost recycled) from some fo the 01 stuff.

It's finger lickin good.

Best lyric ever.
On the other hand, The Human Equation is the most overrated record ever in prog circles.

Stop being such a Borlag.

Sorry, but that record isn't good.

The hell you say!  :lol

Let's face it, Arjen's bag of tricks is only so big, so he is always reusing melodies and such.  If I went through Ayreon's entire discography, I could find dozens of stuff he reused.

01 and THE are the only albums I payed much attention to. I have most of the rest, have listened to them, just didn't pay enough attention to notice.

A new song is up https://www.myspace.com/guiltmachine It's nice but this is still Ayreon. Not as good since there is only one singer.

I see that ex- PT guy Chris Maitland is doing the drums for Guilt Machine, which intrigues me.  I think he's an excellent drummer.  His presence could make for a slight shift in Ayreon's overall sound.
That's pretty cool! Chris Maitland was the drum teacher for my friend Ian. Apparently he used to try to get Ian to listen to PT records, but he never bothered. :lol

Coincidentally I was just shopping on Amazon trying to decide whether to buy the Universal Migrator or Into the Electric Castle. Recommendations? I already have the Human Equation and 01011001.

It depends on what type of music you like more.
The Dream Sequencer is a great, mellow and atmospheric album and Flight of the Migrator is its counterpart - heavy, dynamic, etc. with guests such as Dickinson, Allen, Deris...
Into the Electric Castle has some really great stuff on it, but imo it has a lot of filler in it as well and most of the time it is between those great parts and brings the songs down a notch.

I played through The Human Equation on Audiosurf last night. Trauma looks like the most bad-ass roller coaster ever, and the heavy part of Realization is like driving 100MPH in downtown NYC.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Next to Mikael Akerfeldt, I think Arjen may be the single greatest songwriter ever.  I CANNOT stop listening to his albums.  I've listened to Zero One probably 10 times all the way through in the last few days.  It's inconcievable how one man could handle so much weight on his shoulders and make the product come out like his.

I know, right.

I loved THE and for some reason when I got 01 I didn't think much of it, then when it clicked I was all "woah, this even tops THE!"

Need more new-style ayreon please, I don't go for the old.

Hah, at first I thought THE couldn't be topped, having not listened to any other of his albums, then I listened to Into the Electric Castle and thought it was my favorite.  Then I listened to The Dream Sequencer and didn't think it was my favorite but pretty close.  Now I'm listening to 01 and I think it may be my favorite...  The only one so far I'm not totally nuts over is Flight of the Migrator, which is still great.

I can't say I think much of 01 or Guilt Machine (although I bought the special editions of both) but Arjen remains one of the best music writers I have ever heard, and one of the nicest guys I have ever met, so I will continue to support him by buying the stuff he puts out (unless he decides to put out an avant-guard rap album or something).  :lol

What? An avant-guard sci-fi concept rap album from Arjen and you won't buy it? Blasphemy! That would be the best release in the year it comes out.

I can't even begin to imagine what an Arjen-penned avant-garde sci-fi concept rap album would sound like. :lol

The longer that you claim that you have fought yourself up, the longer the spitfall... :neverusethis:

On that note, I'm listening to Twisted Coil (the first song on the Guilt Machine album), and it's pretty awesome. Maitland is certainly making his mark.

Anyone can talk to Lori, of Arjen for that matter. :p

And I'd rather keep my line to myself.

That's all well and good.

I believe Arjen told me the part that he put on the track from me was "...I feel like I'm getting what I deserve."

Do you recognize it?

I haven't listened to the full CD yet, however some really interesting notes from the DVD interview-

1. Arjen basically said there is no guarantee on future Ayreon albums, but if there are there would be a major scaling back on the number of vocalists. Actual Fantasy anyone?
2. He does NOT consider 01 his best work, even though it's his newest and that attitude is expected of musicians, an interesting bit of honesty there.
3. He wants to do more Guilt Machine albums and
4. He wants to do another Star One album. If this of 4 would happen it would be very interesting as it would be the first multi-album run of a project involving Arjen, aside of obviously Ayreon.
5. Arjen does not want to tour with Guilt Machine, and once again showed his general distaste of touring.

I'd certainly hope he considers The Human Equation his best work.

01's really good, and its concept is great. It loses it when it comes to the music though. The best song off the album is Age of Shadows by a ridiculously large margin, and being the first track, the rest of the album's somewhat of a downer when nothing else comes close.

Except for a bunch of songs.

Such as? 01 has other good songs, but not in comparison. Sixth Extinction or Unnatural Selection would probably be 2nd.

Edit: That one segment at 8:50 of the Fifth Extinction is the best moment of the album. ("And as the smoke slowly rises...")
