Godspeed You! Black Emperor Top 20

20-13 = Useless Shit from All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling

A very calm and minimalist opening track to the band's final album. Sets up the mood for the greatness to come for the next couple of songs. But it falls short of being as great as the rest of their catalog.

Hard to classify. The first songs off of F#A#infinity, Dead Flag Blues, and Lift Your Skinny Fists, Storm, should give you a good impression if you can find somewhere to listen to them.

11. BBF3
A great song, the way it builds up along with the man being interviewed, it fits it so well. It rises and rises like a gathering wave untill it reaches the intense climax. And then it all breaks down into a soft, yet haunting ending that finishes the album in a way that is no less than perfect.

10. East Hastings
This song is weird for me, it contains some of the most awesome music, but then it has that annoying white noise ending. But it does not hamper the song to much. It had a awesome place in the movie 28 Days Later. It really captures the mood of the album well, dark and lonely music throughout.

Honestly, their terrifying ambience is what got me into them at first anyway. This section is my favorite part of the song. Sleep is their best song without a doubt though, so it better come in first.

Hehe, I was thinking about trying to swap songs for the sake of having a surprise end, but I couldn't do it.

The last time I listened to LYSFLATH (that still isn't short  :P ) I liked Static more than Sleep.

Both are great though.

9. Providence
This is the hardest part for me so far, deciding that this song had to be this low on the list. But I just could not decide on any other song to put before it, I absolutely love all their material. This is the point in their catalog where you can not look for faults, but you must measure the greatness that each song achieves. And while this song is very great, the level of greatness told me to put it at the number 9 spot. A beautiful, optimistic ending to such a dark album. This song sing a triumphant sound throughout it, split between moments of ambiance. Each instrument has a soul, and is played with great flavor.

8. Antennas to Heaven
I get the feeling that this song is pretty underrated among fans, it does not generate a whole lot of discussion. But a song that must follow up to the brilliance on the rest of the album, and end it all has a difficult role to fill. The first 4 minutes of the song are filled with a wide variety of music, ranging from the folk tale like beginning, to the dream like music that follows it. Then the strings enter, slowly singing their notes until the song kicks in at around 5 and a half minutes in. And then it dies down as quickly as it came. The rest of the song is filled with more music and more ambiance. There is just something about this track that I love, and it rightfully deserves a spot as one of their greatest works.

Storm is great and definitely has more instrumentation to it, but Sleep's minimalistic approach to an incredibly perfect and beautiful progression demonstrates what the band is best at. You get the great ambient introduction, then the emotional build-up, then the incredible military-like section where all of the instruments work together, then you get that great guitar work, a painting worth of beauty in the second build-up, a hip-hop section anchored by incredibly awesome strings, then that loud as all fuck, yet epic as heck outro. Everything the band is awesome for is all in that one song, and not a second is wasted.

7.  Moya
Short and sweet, a great opener to my favorite EP of all time. I like to think of this as a great introductory song to the group. It shows off a lot of what they are about, but it does not go into their extreme experimentation to ward off new listeners. I can't really say much about it, most people who listen to it know how great of a song it is.

6. Storm
A light, almost happy song made by a band who is known for their dark material. It carries a different feel from their usual material. To me it feels like waking up on a bright morning, and just appreciating the world. It's hard to put in words the emotion that this song portrays to me. It is a perfect opener and really prepares you for all the epicness ahead. The song carries the usual length of 20 minutes, but the time goes by so fast that it feels like its been a near 10. Every moment of this song is natural, filled with not a second of unnecessary music.

5. The Dead Flag Blues

Possibly the darkest song this band has ever produced. Again, nothing needs to be said about this song, it is just perfect, so I will just leave you with this:

The car is on fire, and there's no driver at the wheel
And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides
And a dark wind blows

The government is corrupt
And we're on so many drugs
With the radio on and the curtains drawn

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine
And the machine is bleeding to death

The sun has fallen down
And the billboards are all leering
And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles

4. Motherfucker=Redeemer
What a monster of a song. The way it builds up into a blazing furry of guitar screeching and stylish drums is just awesome. And after all the energy and noise is slowly brings itself down to a halt. Down to a dream like state, music that feels so relaxing like its the anthem to going to bed. Each instrument feels like its trying to sing you to sleep, in a good way. The spacey echos of guitar, the gentle hum of the strings, it all just feels so right. And then part 2 begins and the song starts picking up again. It gets more energetic, but not being as crazy as the first part was. And then it just ends, without warning, and I could not think of a more perfect ending to the album. This song keeps the whole minimalist that the album strongly shows off. It's a great example of how slowly working up a song can produce some fantastic results.

3. Static
This was battling for my top spot for a while. It is a very powerful song, and contains some of their best work. The preacher talking in the beginning is a very moving selection they decided to put in, really adds to the atmosphere. The whole song is really creepy, it feels like a soundtrack to a very dark and grim world. Of course it has their trademark build up song structure that ultimately leads to the amazing climax of the song. But the way it builds up while still keeping the eerie atmosphere throughout makes it a very haunting song.

2. Sleep

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I GOT YOU GOOD YOU FUCKERS. But seriously, the battle for the top spot was a very hard choice to make, the difference between this and the top song is a very thin line. Ultimately it came down to this song making me feel sad, and the top song making me feel triumphant. This song is a masterfully crafted masterpiece, and is in my top 5 songs of all time. It is emotionally captivating, it is haunting, melancholic, and just perfect. And then the ending comes it, and it turns swaps over to some really beautiful music. The guitars in combination with the strings and the drums just work so well.

1. Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls
I don't really know how to describe this song, epic, powerful, simple, there are a thousand words for it. This song perfectly summarizes up what Yanqui UXO is about, minimalism. It never rushes itself, always changing at just the right moment. Never tries to show off or showcase just a single member of the band, everyone just blends together to make this song perfect. It shows the power that music is able to capture, the energy that can be created, and the triumph that it displays. Listening to this song during my Counter-Strike games with my 11th kill in a row gave me adrenaline shots (Yeah, I'm a giant nerd).  There is just something about this song that captivates me in a way few songs do.
