Joy Division

Anyone ever get into this "legendary" band?  They released some great music before Ian Curtis hung himself.

Never totally got into them, but my girlfriend really likes them. Their style is very distinctive.

If you like Joy Division, make sure you watch the movie 'Control' by Anton Corbijn.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Never got into them, what kind of music is it? Where should I start?

They've only got 2 albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer.   I'd start with Unknown Pleasures.  Their biggest 'hit' is Love Will Tear Us Apart.

The Post-rock movement owes big time to Joy Division.

Wow, haven't seen this name (or listened to this band) in a long, long time.  Good stuff.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I heard the NHL was realigning:

The Adams Division: Bruins, Sabres, Maple leafs,
The Patrick Division: Caps, Rangers, Devils
The Norris Division: Canadians, Blackhawks, Red Wings
The Smythe Division: Kinds, Canucks, Sharks, Ducks

..and..

THE JOY DIVISION: contains one team..the NEW YORK ISLANDERS!!

 :P
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

A high school friend of mine was REALLY into them, so I listened on occasion.  He wrote a book while we were in college, which I contributed some editing, plot ideas, and artwork to.  Each chapter was named after a New Order song, and the book itself was titled Closer.  Yeah, some definite NO/JD homage going on.  :)

BUMP

Amazing band. Ian Curtis was a a tragic genius. RIP  :sadpanda:

More people need to recognize this band; they were seriously awesome and made some profound poetry before their end. New Order is really good, too.

I haven't really listen to them, but i did see "Control"(biographical film about Ian Curtis' life), which was really good,
even for non-fans of the band. I should probably buy their albums, since i liked what music of thiers that was played.

IIRC Portrucci also really digs Unknown Pleasures. Looks like this is the second time you've bumped this thread, Ravenheart.

They are one of those bands I don't listen very often but that I really like.

Closer and Unknown Pleasures are two of my favorite albums.

Hm, considering the amount of praise this band gets, I should prolly give them a listen.

Tell me, how many breakdowns do they do, on average? Keyboard solo's? Mellotrons? 9+ minute songs? :neverusethis:

My favorite Joy Division song is Octavarium of the Odyssey. It's a 60-minute epic that has all of these qualities, plus a 10-minute banjo solo interlude.

Hey remind me to listen to Joy Division this week. I'm up for upgrading my current copies of Unknown Pleasures and 'Closer'.

How is the last album pronounced? Clozer or as in "dose" or "close to home"?

I keep hearing about Joy Division and how good they are, and they keep popping up in my suggestions on Last.fm, yet I haven't heard a single song by them! Maybe it's 'bout time I check 'em out!

Well, you should listen to them. When their forces combine, they have the majority of their b-sides, which are all essential.
