Since he left DT, I think Sherinian has done some really awesome stuff. He took the lessons and skills gained from ACOS and FII and made a great prog-rocker out of himself.
Be it with Planet X or his amazing solo music, Sherinian impresses me at every turn.
What do you guys think?

I was just listening to Quantum yesterday and being absolutely slayed by the polymetrics. I think having Virgil Donati and Derek Sherinian is perhaps too much goodness for one band.

I like what I´ve heard of his solo stuff. Planet X I don´t like that much but maybe because I need more technical-musical knowledge to really appreciate it.

Falling Into Infinity would have been soooo different had Derek been allowed to be himself

His solo stuff/Planet X is top notch. Easily my favorite of all DT member side projects/solo work

Both bodies of work fall into a category of stuff I generally find somewhat interesting and enjoyable, but I'm never really blown away. On the other hand I can never remember hearing anything and being really disappointed either.

The reason I cannot listen to 2 consecutive Planet X songs is the lack of melodies. It has its impressive moments but gets boring after a while.

As I've said since he joined, Derek is a great guy, just not the right guy for Dream Theater.

I've liked his work so much more since he left, although I think the last CD I have is Quantum (so I'm not very current).

I think Derek was very smart in surrounding himself with a stellar supporting cast on most of his albums.

Planet X is great. Virgil Donati is one of my favorite drummers as well.

When I was in college, I took an American Film class, and for one of my projects, I took the 1922 version of "The Phantom of the Opera", and remade the soundtrack using Planet X songs. It got a perfect score

i have all 3 Planet X studio albums as well as Live From Oz. i also have all the Sherinian solo albums and i love them all. the best being Planet X - Moonbabies & Quantum; solo - Planet X, Blood of the Snake, and Molecular Heinosity. I like how Planet X dont have a full-time bassist, as all the ones theyve played with are stellar. Also glad to hear Tony McAlpine is coming back!

his work is by far, the most interesting outside of Dream Theater, (with JR's solo stuff second). As much as i like Falling into Infinity, it's not entirely representative of him.

it's funny though, when i was new-ish to Dream Theater, i avoided FII, only knew a couple of tracks. when i got back into DT early last year after 3 years of very little listening, i remember eventually checking out FII in full. in the time i hadnt listened to DT, i HAD listened to a lot of DS's stuff and remember listening to FII and thinking "oh thats such a Sherinian moment, or sound or whatever". I had never noticed it before, and my appreciation for that album has gone way up.

cant wait for the new Planet X album next year!

This is a pretty cool behind the scenes of the Moonbabies session with Simon Phillips as engineer in his studio.

I love how Simon and Virgil are discussing that one cymbal hit being maybe a bit off in the midst of the gazillion notes Virgil plays.

Virgil is such an insane player!

To be fair, Sherinian leveled up as a player after leaving DT. But Minnemann and Donati were my top choices at the time to replace Portnoy. Subsequently I've grown even more fond of Wildoer and Lang as well.

To be fair, I'd say Mangini is just as technically advanced as Virgil, just with a different approach. As for Derek, the guy can play really well but Jordan is on another level. Also, Virgil was the main writer for Planet X anyway, his solo stuff sounds just like that, it's not like Derek was a huge creative force for it or DT.

Preordered the anthology set. I have Universe and Quantum but I remember never being able to find a cheap cd copy of Moonbabies to save my life back in the day.

I love Derek's fusion side a lot more than 90% of his work in Dream Theater. I'd have preferred Marco or Virgil too, but Dream Theater wanted a bandmate which I'm not sure if those guys are as much as I love them.
