Deftones
« on: October 08, 2009, 09:15:11 PM »
Every once in a while, out of the murky and over-populated waters of "nu-metal", a great band rises that deserves to be heard.

Deftones is this band.

From haunting and beautiful atmospheres to relentless and driven metal, this band is definately one of the most unique and distinctive bands around. Although their newest album is being delayed due to the accident the bassist was in, their past stuff is definately enough to keep me interested.

Favorite album: White Pony

Favorite songs: Passenger, Around the Fur, Lucky You, Street Carp

No offense, and of course this is just my opinion, but I really, really don't like these guys.

Of course, I'm sure I could list a bunch of bands that you don't like as well.  All just a matter of taste, but these guys rub me the wrong way.  Maybe I haven't heard the right stuff, but I've listened to most of their studio albums and was never impressed.

Definitely used to be a top 5 band, and definitely the best thing Nu-Metal has to offer, honestly.

Yep, definitely the best nu metal band.  I love Chi Moreno's poetic lyrics and vocal delivery, he's what makes the band in my opinion.  White Pony is easily their masterpiece but their newest "Saturday Night Wrist" is also amazing.  I can't wait for Eros.

I really like Deftones but the only album I can really sit and listen to all the way through is 'White Pony'. The s/t and Saturday Night Wrist also have some cool material on it. I wouldn't exactly call them nu-metal though. They were just pigeonholed in there when that genre was popular.

I honestly couldn't give you a pretty reliable opinion of these guys; I've heard only two original songs of theirs from the Matrix Reloaded and Little Nicky soundtracks respectively (there's a second acoustic Deftones song on Little Nicky but I never listened to it), and one Sevendust song where Moreno provided guest vocals.  Where should I start?

The Deftones were my favourite band through my teen years.

The White Pony is probably their most well thought of album but i rank adrenaline and around the fur just as highly.

Also,

Favorite album: White Pony

Favorite songs: Passenger, Around the Fur, Lucky You, Street Carp

Jesus, those are pretty much my two least favourite Deftones songs.

My favourite songs would be

Adrenaline -Birthmark, lifter, 7 words
Around The Fur - My Own Summer, Lotion, Be quiet and drive
The White Pony - Digital bath, knife prty, passenger
Self Titled - Hexagram, battle axe, deathblow
Saturday Night Wrist - Cherry Waves, rapture, hole in the earth

They played this song on "Retro Rock" on Music Choice when I was playing guess the band.  I was like who the f are these people and why are they on this station?  That album was released in 1995... I'm guessing they were the ones that pretty much got the genre rolling.

Unfortunately, I hate the genre, so they suck.

The new album Diamond Eyes is pretty good! I love the more Meshuggah-ish sound of the guitars, and all the choruses are awesome. Great atmosphere as well, once again.

One of my friend's showed me this song by the Deftones, claimed it to be Prog Metal. Well the rest of the story shouldn't be told, I'll leave it there.

I haven't listened to them in forever (last album I got was White Pony) but used to LOVE them and still listen once in a blue moon. I always loved Around the Fur and Adrenaline, but couldn't fully get into WP as much as I loved a few tracks.

Around the Fur is my fav album. then its

White Pony
Adrenaline

I think afterwards with these albums they went downhill...

Deftones
Saturday Night Wrist

However the 2 tracks (Diamond Eyes, Rocket Skates) from Diamond Eyes are amazing.  I'm really pumped for the new album.

Definitely used to be a top 5 band, and definitely the best thing Nu-Metal has to offer, honestly.

I sort of question the "nu metal" tag put on Deftones...the first album sure, but most of the rest goes well beyond the genre.

Yeah i don't really see them as "nu metal".  I remember the whole Limp Bizkit/Korn/Deftones thing was very popular in 90s but I still see the Deftones sound a lot different from the LB and Korn.

Still haven't gotten a chance to get Diamond Eyes but I'm hoping to pick it up sometime this week.  The two tracks I heard were amazing.

This.

The lyrics in Risk and 976 Evil certainly seem to be about him which really adds some depth to the tracks. I'm very impressed with this cd, not a bad track on it and vocal hooks galore!

The chorus in beauty queen is sensational!

Also, the riffs on this album! Stephen's best performance on a deftones album so far.
