Epica appreciation thread
« on: May 09, 2009, 07:21:34 AM »
Noticed the new forums didn't have an appreciation thread for Epica, so I guess I should start one, especially as my Classical Conspiracy double cd arrived (which is drop-dead amazing). I mean come on, look at the track listing:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Classical_Conspiracy

My favourite being the Imperial March (Star Wars)

Also, in before the male vocals suck ;)

Which album is your favourite and why? Mine's probably their third (and latest), but I think all three are spectacular.

I wish their albums were as good as the one that inspired their name.

Also, whoever said they weren't good live... well the classical conspiracy says otherwise  :hat

I wish their albums were as good as the one that inspired their name.

Eh, I prefer The Black halo and Karma, not so sure about Ghost Opera though.

They certainly are very good live, saw them a couple of years ago at a festival in Finland.

I saw them open for Symphony X but i think the singer was different... because it was some blonde woman and she wasn't really hot... I think it was a different singer but they were pretty epic

That was Amanda Sommersville (sp?). She is on all of their cd's as a back up singer and helps arrange the vocals on their cd's. She is also a vocal coach and such. Simone was ill for a while so Amanda filled in for a while.

I posted about The Divine Conspiracy before the board crash, and figured I'd chime in again on it.  The subject matter still pisses me off.  But, musically, this has to be one of the strongest albums ever written by anyone.  I can't stop listening to it.  Simone's vocals are incredibly strong, and the music behind her is the perfect blend of heavy, epic, complex, and beautiful.  Even the troll's screamy vocals somehow don't drag it down.

I don't much like the lyrics, but what can you expect from a european power metal band writing in a different language

So overrated, especially because of that redheaded chick that's fapped to way too much.

I appreciate The Divine Conspiracy's album cover.

I liked the band for a little bit, but if they'd get rid of that troll, I'd like them more. I just don't like growls mixed with female fronted metal.

Was it along the same lines of Dominici's O3 album?

Really liking the song after a few listens.  The video is slightly cheeseball but that song is pretty great IMO.  Looking forward to the new album in a couple of weeks  :tup

I haven't heard their new album yet, but I'm pretty sure it fails simply for not having Simone on the cover.

I went to pick it up as well.  The release date (at least in the U.S.) is pushed back.  It's either November 3 or November 10.  But I did find The Classical Conspiracy while I was there.  :tup

Hah! That makes up for us getting the new Transatlantic late!

I've listened to some of it on Spotify, it's not bad, but I don't think I'm a huge fan of Epica's music, something just doesn't quite sit right with me. And their growly vocals are just laughable.

No, I don't think it does.  Transatlantic >>>>>>> (would to more but that would just be obnoxious) > Epica

So there.  :P

And did I mention I just got done listening to both CD's from the new TA just a little while ago?  When I'm done with Redemption, I think I'll do it again.  And maybe a third time later today.

Nah I only have to wait until Monday (hopefully) :)

With the new Epica though, if you like Divine Conspiracy then I'd be surprised if you don't like the new one.

Design Your Universe is absolutely amazing!! Love all the heavy riffs and the guitar solos! Their whole symphonic part is a full on this album.

I can't decide whether I'm impressed with the new album or not. I think I was just hoping for more of a progression of sound rather than the after forever approach "yeah we have a good sound so lets just do it over and over again" :(

Well they did add some amazing guitar solos imo. I know what you're saying though about the sound. They tend to use it all the time, but it's always good, at least for me.

Well, to be honest, I really dont like the new album too much right now, although it does need more listening. The only song I keep coming back to is Unleashed. I mean, all of the songs have really nice parts in them, but they sound very...samey to me. Its just not catching my attention as much as the Divine Conspiracy did.

After hearing a lot about this band, I decided to check out The Classical Conspiracy.  Overall, I like it a lot.  I like the mix of classical and epic rock, and it's done pretty well.  I guess I just don't "get" growly vocals.  It just sounds really stupid to me whenever he sings like that.  Otherwise, it's all pretty good stuff.

It's the only album by them that I've heard, but I like it and may check out some more when I get a chance.

That is NOT a good example of growly vocals. I have nothing against growls, but the Epica dude's vocals sound like a retarded troll.

Epic thread resurrection.

So I pretty much love the new album now, perhaps even more so than the divine conspiracy.

Kingdom of Heaven ~ A New Age Dawns - part V has to be Epica's best song evar.

Any other takers?

Its definately a really solid album. I really love Diving Conspiracy though. I would rank this just a tiny bit lower
