The second sample sounds amazing. I don't listen to 70s prog but for some reason I get a 70s vibe from it. And I wouldn't really know what a 70s vibe actually is, other than KC.

I guess I fell in love with In Two Minds but don't know why I'm obsessed right now. It always plays in my head. Love the bass sound and amazing vocals.

Funny thing the first line sounds like, "another day of toking" not, "... of talking"

I've just listened for the first time in three years to Riverside, completing the Reality Dream Trilogy in two days. Wow, how could I have been so stupid to ignore this band for all my life, despite knowing they existed and that they were somewhat cool? Stupid me, Murray me.

Well then don't forget to check into Anno Domini High Definition.   I think it's their best.

The thing I love about Riverside is that there's a strong sense of improvisation in their music.   They'll start a song with a simple bass line or keyboard motif, then slowly build around it with all sorts of nuanced playing, then BAM they'll hit you with a big climactic riff.  It reminds me of some post-rock or even the Grateful Dead.

gotta say the samples didn't catch me at all. sounds like they are following an ADHD + "Rainbow Box" sort of thing that doesn't hit me as hard as the Reality Dream trilogy does. however, the two lengthy bonus tracks may be a different story...

I was told it's their heaviest as well. Is that right?

I don't really judge the Riverside albums based on their heaviness, but ADHD is certainly heavy enough for me.

Even though they're generally classified as Prog-metal, Riverside never approached the heaviness of a Dream Theater (or even Porcupine Tree, who are not considered Prog-metal in most circles).

I listened to ADHD for the first time yesterday. It was quite weird, I was very disappointed by the first half of the album, and still the latter managed to blow me away in an extreme way. Maybe it's just me. I'm going to go through it another time now.

Yes! Even though I felt that Hybrid Types was at least on par with it!  :)

How about giving me a very essential review of their latest EP release? I think it's their last studio effort I still need to listen.

The latest EP is really cool. Sounds more like the Reality Dream trilogy than ADHD in terms of sound, so a more "classic" prog-sound, without the heavier moments of ADHD. Forgotten Land is probably my favorite from it.

What he said - basically, it's their last return to the sonic land of Reality Dream. It was okay, but I preferred the Voices In My Head EP, which has the very essential Acronym Love on it.

Voices In My Head! I knew I had forgotten something. I still need to examine that EP as well. Likely tomorrow I will.  :)

Listening to that album on the way home actually, love it.

it's amazing. solid the whole time, full of memorable melodies and curious structures. nothing like ADHD in the best possible way. it's basically a single song in, as mentioned, the Reality Dream style. i'd actually call it essential (certainly more so than Voices in My Head, though that's awesome too).

The main riff makes me cringe.  I like the last quarter of the song I guess...

I would say Rapid Eye Movement, which is really awesome. Has two of my favorite Riverside-songs on it; Beyond the Eyelids and Ultimate Trip.
Out of Myself is great as well, but it's probably my least favorite album of theirs.

At the moment I must say that Out Of Myself is my favourite!

Anyway, I have in my hands the complete Reality Dream Superbox, still packed and waiting to be opened at Christmas. This wait is killing me :D

That's OOM, SLS, REM + Voices In My Head and 2 live CDs I believe.   :)

Why? Little time to dedicate to music? Lack of interest?

Still, for all you haters who want to know what kind of progressive album I was hoping for from Heritage two years ago, this would be a good example. This is a band who can write 70s influenced prog, while still maintaining cohesive and interesting songs that are fun to listen to and simultaneously intellectually stimulating. Shrine of New Generation Slaves shows that Riverside hasn’t lost a step talentwise while wandering into their fifth album, even if they have dialed back the heaviness. This record is a pretty good way to start out the new year and might well be a grower. It comes highly recommended from this Angry Metal Guy.

This last passage is quite meaningful and sums up what can we expect from the album. I'm not really a fan of the classic "old classic prog revival" album in the vein of Heritage, but if the band managed to stay true to itself doing this I'm perfectly fine with their choice. Then, I will judge myself. The album is out in 5 days, right?
