You'd think that as a hired gun he'd realize that that was all he was; just a guy filling in drums.

And helping the band sell a shit load more records.

Not trying to bait or pick a fight here, but very few people cared about post-DT KevMo  projects until Portnoy jumped on the OSI record.

Also, it has always pissed me off to no end that MP jumped on Free last minute purely as a favor, and yet Kevin Moore would not even repay MP by being interviewed by Rich Wilson, let alone play a song or two with DT.

As a favour? It's not like they couldn't get any other drummer, you know. I'm pretty sure he got his fair share for his participation. And to my knowledge KM didn't ask him to do any DT material, so... both things are completely unrelated.
Another reason why he played is because they were friends with Jim, not because of Kevin. Maybe he should ask Matheos to play SDV with them instead.

Yes.

My house is a funeral home.

Ahh I see.  I read in the paper today about some funeral home worker who cut off a dead guy's feet so he could fit him in a casket.

Guess he was just 'cutting' costs

No, they are not unrelated, this goes above the normal expected payment and people being decent people. Mike Portnoy originally said he had no interest in the 2nd OSI album, and yet he posts on his forum one day that as a favor he recorded drums for it over the weekend. On the other hand you have a guy writing an official biography for a band, of which Kevin Moore was an original member, composer, 8 year contributor, and appeared on 3 albums, and he wouldn't even be interviewed for it. Outside of Portnoy's favor that is just plain wrong, but all things considered, Portnoy tried to help Kevin despite the fact that he left the band hanging with a world tour on the way. Portnoy's name alone brought OSI a ton more exposure than it otherwise would have gotten. And after that, Kevin Moore can't do an interview? Give me a break.

I love OSI, and I have never been overly critical of Kevin Moore for not wanting to play live with Dream Theater, but refusing to do an interview for the official biography is just plain wrong.

If anything, the so called favour was to Jim. He could have refused, I am not aware of any agreement between them for KM doing interviews/shows with them to "return" the favour. They have nothing in common and Portnoy was a very willing part of the first OSI. The fact that he plays drums in the second is meaningless - his name already added to the popularity of the project.

Once again, I'm not talking about any sort of agreement, I'm talking about simple decency.

He played drums. He got payed. KM has made himself clear, both things are completely unrelated, I don't know what wrong or indecent thing you see in all this.

OKAY PEOPLE......let's not have this debate.  We have this in every DT-side thread, and it always ends up at the same impasse.

If I helped form a band, stayed with that band for 8 years and 3 albums, then left the band prior to a world tour, saw the band gain popularity for a long time, enough to eventually have an official biography written about them, I certainly would consider it a classless move not to take a few hours to do an interview for the book.

In addition, if a member of said band had even helped me out down the line, then that just adds to things.

You're right Super Dude, we've had this debate before and this thread isn't really the place for it, I'll consider this a stern warning and stop posting on the subject here.

I heard there was an interview here where KM actually spoke rather generously of MP?

Quote
BW&BK: Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) is no longer involved in OSI. What happened there?

KM: “I don’t think anything happened, it was just that we were continuing to try to get new voices involved with the album. Jim was in control of personnel on this album, and he’s a big fan of PORCUPINE TREE. He contacted Gavin (Harrison) and we were happy he was willing to get involved on drums. We worked with him long-distance over the internet, sending files back and forth. We did a lot of back and forth, making changes and bouncing ideas off of each other. It went well.”

BW&BK: Mike Portnoy seems to be more of a traditional prog guy, especially with all his side-projects… they’re very much based in traditional progressive music. Did he find it challenging to work with the more electronic aspects of OSI that you brought to the table?

KM: “I guess you’d have to talk to him about that, but that was another clash of styles that makes for interesting music. I think it worked out, and his contributions to the music were great. That conflict between progressive songwriting and the electronic style was there, but I think it worked out.”

Okay, I'm coming around on this album.  After the first two listens, I was so disappointed that I deleted the files (yes, I downloaded them - sue me).  But after all this talk about "what genre is it?" and "electronica" I gave it another shot.  To me honest, I still don't hear "electronica" any more than I did before.  It's different, but it's still rock and roll.  The wide diversity of styles makes it rather proggy to me, but some were saying it's definitely not prog (but that's probably coming from people with pretty narrow definitions of prog).

Anyway, it's a lot catchier than I gave it credit for, the production is excellent, and I guess I'm getting used to Kevin's vocals.  They still bug me a little, and sound pretty lifeless, but they're interesting, and if you regard them as something like another instrument, another sound amidst the confusion, it works better.  For me, anyway.

So two listens, then a week or two away from it, and two more listens.  It's growing on me.  I probably had my expectations all screwed up the first time.  Mistake.

The first time I listened to the s/t and Free, I had no idea what hit me. So, after listening to Blood the first time, when I barely remembered anything I just heard, I was not surprised. Another listen or two has proved helpful -- It might be my favorite album of the year now.
