I want more instrumental songs like Microburst Alert. That song is amazing.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I'm with you bro, I love that song.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

I'd say pretty confidently that it's my favorite OSI song.

I think Free might be my favorite OSI album, but somehow that sentiment keeps changing up on me.  Either way, I don't think you could really underestimate Mike Portnoy's contributions on those 1st two albums.

Such an unusual dynamic in this band...  Jim Matheos is/was the primary lyricist in Fates Warning, but meanwhile he has yet to write a lick of lyrics for an OSI album.  I'm wondering (hoping) to see if this changes for the next album.

Interesting point about the lyrics.  I love Jim's lyrics in FW.  But I feel like if he started to write lyrics for OSI, it would totally change the "feel" of OSI songs that people have grown to like.  Kevin's lyrics are so unusual and nursery rhyme-like at times (see "When You're Ready," "All Gone Now," "Be the Hero," etc.), and they've become an indentifiable characteristic of an OSI song.  To have a different lyricist would be a really big change.  Maybe Jim could write lyrics for a song or two, but I feel like the majority of the lyrics still has to be KM or it wouldn't feel like OSI.

Yeah, even though it started out as Matheos' pet project, it seems like KevMo has pretty much molded OSI into his own vehicle/vision.  Surely one of the reasons MP decided to pack it in.

Would've been interesting to what OSI would've become if Gildenlow or John Arch was the vocalist, as was intended early on my Matheos.

I have to agree with Merbert on the topic of lyrical contributions. I would be interested to hear some input from Jim but I think they're formula now is working great while still maintaining it's originality.

My respective favorites from each album are "Terminal," "When You're Ready" and probably "Home Was Good."

Free could possibly be my favorite OSI CD if tracks 6-9 were stronger.

Yeah, didn't Akerfeldt write his own lyrics for "Stockholm"?  There was nothing wrong with the lyrics, but they really didn't fit the feel of the disc at all.  I like Opeth and I think Akerfeldt is a fantastic singer and lyricist, but his involvement on Blood was a bad decision IMO.

I thought it fit until the 2:30 mark, the song then took a weird turn that didn't really fit the album IMO.

OSI is such an experimental band that I don't care if something doesn't "fit" so long as it's good. Unfortunately, not only have their guest spots not fit; they have kind of blown.

It's pretty easy to confuse the two.

EDIT: Holy shit I want to hear a Mikael Akerfeldt version of Friday now!

Radiologue has a kinda dubsteppy feel, someone mix it

Also Stockholm is alriiight. It's better than Microburst Alert.

I really can't make a top 10, I love too many of their songs.  For instance, shutDOWN excepted, I love the entire debut album (yes, including Memory Daydreams Lapses, although I'm not sure if it's deserving of the no. 1 spot), and on occasion even that track clicks for me.

Also I don't see how Radiologue sounds dubsteppy at all?  I would think Microburst Alert sounds closer to dubstep.

Rhythmically I mean. It has the half-time feel going and the drum patterns/fills are reminiscent of that style, although they aren't full of triplets

Yeah I dunno, I still feel like that better describes Microburst Alert, but then I don't pay that much attention to the time signature.

Just thought I'd update this thread with info on OSI's upcoming fourth studio album.  It's slated to be released on Metal Blade Records in January 2012.  No song titles or artwork are available yet, but Kevin Moore and Jim Matheos are wrapping up mixing right now in Iowa.  Below are photos from the studio posted the past two weeks by Moore on Twitter.  And here is a video just posted by Moore on Facebook this afternoon that includes what sounds like a new OSI song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pcsgmvHKlM
