Mt. Rushmore of Non-Standard Instruments
« on: February 24, 2023, 04:36:56 PM »
Likely to be less popular than the others, but I'd love to give a bit of a highlight to some instruments other than the standard vocals/guitar/bass/drums/keys format.  A few of mine:

Saxophone:

Dexter Gordon
John Coltrane
Sonny Rollins
Wayne Shorter

Violin:

Fionnuala Sherry
Hilary Hahn
Karen Briggs
Lisa Batiashvili

Mandolin:

Chris Thile
Mike Marshall
Sam Bush
Sierra Hull

John Deacon blew everyone away playing the triangle during the performances of 'Killer Queen' on stage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_tUBQJZF-M

And ...no one, I mean no one could match the master chops Brian May would display on ukulele during 'Bring Back That Leroy Brown'
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW_rVxb6QKo

Freddie was FAB with the tambourine during 'Liar' and 'Keep Yourself Alive'

Roger played a mean cowbell during 'Keep Yourself Alive'. :D  His solo on the timpani drums before the guitar solo of 'Brighton Rock' during the Jazz / Live Killers tours was uhm,...er....'killer' ;)  Only Bonham was better!  ;)  And he was fairly good on tambourine as well.

Ian Anderson and that flute, sometimes with the clarinet.

Peter Buck and the mandolin.

Clarence Clemons and the sax.

I wish I knew more of these types of players by name, but for the most part when I hear these instruments in music I like they are extra musicians brought in to play on the album. Or I just don’t know enough of them to make out a Mt. Rushmore. Like, Chris Thile is awesome, but I don’t really even know of another musician who specializes in mandolin.

Gheorghe Zamfir.  Master of the pan flute.

I only know this from infomercials from my youth late night.

Hmm, percussionists.  I'd agree on Lockett, and would add Zakir Hussain, Alla Rakha, and Raul Rekow.  Honorable mentions for Collin Walcott, Trilok Gurtu, and Tito Puente.

Without him Kill Bill would never have been the same. He was a crucial part in one of my favorite scenes.

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

This is so difficult, mostly because I don’t think I know enough people in any instrumentto truly do it justice, but let’s try a couple..

Saxophone:
John Coltrane
Charlie Parker
Sonny Rollins
Ornette Coleman

Trumpet:
Louis Armstrong
Miles Davis
Chet Baker
Dizzy Gillespie

Jazz Pianists:
Duke Ellington
Thelonius Monk
Bill Evans
Herbie Hancock

Man, in all those categories you could make a point for someone else as well :lol

Heck, you could do jazz vibraphone with Cal Tjader, Gary Burton, Lionel Hampton, and Milt Jackson.
