OSI - Official Thread
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:46:34 AM »
So yeah... it is officially out now, I just got my preordered copy and now I can "legally" say - IT's FUCKING AWESOME!
But, being me and all that I will point out a few really, really small "glitches":
- the sudden and abrupt end of We Come Undone.
- the bonus CD isn't really that great (compared to the debut or Free, the latter one having bonus material on par with the album itself, imo). No Celebrations is a really heavy song (especially for OSI), more like the original idea of OSI (think debut) with Tim Bowness doing some really unexpected vocals for him. I thought this was going to be something dark and broody but it turned out to be almost a straight (prog) metal song. The cover song - Christian Brothers. Really? I don't know who picked that but I think it's a bad choice. I don't like that song at all (original too). The extended version of Terminal, however, is pure gold. The first 6 minutes are the same as the album version but after that Kev and Gavin do their thing - great electronic melodies with Gavin doing some really sweet drumming. This time the drums aren't blending in but instead they are out on the surface. Really cool.
- no extended version for Blood :p Seriously, Kevin MUST do a re:Blood EP. This album is just asking for it.

The rest of the songs are near or flat out perfect, imo. Because of these minor things I'll give this album a 9.9/10. Yeah, I love OSI that much.

The first four songs are pure awesome, even if they get a bit lengthy. I have mixed opinions on the rest of it. I think Microburst Alert is really cool for the grooviness of it.

Haven't listened to the bonus tracks yet.

I'm abydos (hooray, we agree on something! :D), the album is absolutely brilliant. I'll need to give it longer to sink in, but it could well end up being my favourite OSI album.

I could never get into the s/t record, and I never heard Free.

I downloaded Blood and I was blown away :tup Radiologue is an amazing work.

I tried to get into the first album as well, but could not.  Too dry, or unfocused, or something.  The bonus track ("The Thing That Never Was" or something like that) was easily the most interesting track, and it wasn't on the album.

So like Antigoon, I never bothered with Free because the first album didn't click.  But I'll check out Blood, especially since it's supposedly better.

Well, I think that if you like Blood you should like Free as well. Free is still a bit more electronic but it is a lot more similar in style to Blood than it is to the debut album.
Orbert, The Thing That Never Was is actually the album before it got chopped up by Kevin and Matheos. This was Jim's original idea of the band when he thought to get Gildenlow for the vocals.

ariich, this is an occasion for celebration! If we ever meet - I'll buy you a beer :P

It's my second favorite right behind the first album. It would be the best if they switched out We Come Undone and the second half of Stockholm, it starts off great but loses it towards the end for me. I haven't gotten my cd's in the mail yet but I'm excited to hear the bonus disc.

Stockholm is now my least favorite on here. Great, great album. Their best IMO. Terminal is always so relaxing.

Stockholm is the best song by far, mainly because KM isn't singing on it.
Pretty good album spoilt once again by KM drone.

Yes but not too much. Probably more than Free, though. The Escape Artist, Be The Hero, Microburst Alert, No Celebrations - all are more or less in the vein of the debut with more prominent guitars.

I also agree with your comments on Free. I think all three of the albums have very different to feels to them, but the debut, while I love it, had more of a straight-forward prog edge, whereas Free and Blood have both displayed a slightly more experimental side of the band.

All three albums are excellent though IMO.

Actually I always thought of the ST as being more metal-oriented, and Free as more electronic.  It's all up to interpretation though. :)

But in that sense, I'm guessing Blood is closer to Free musically?

Nice interview, not new much though. Too bad they cant tour, but with their reputation I wonder why no music company help them with the financial cost.

It takes a lot more than reputation; the reason Roadrunner took Dream Theater on "reputation alone" was because they had the sales to back it up.

Okay, listened to it a few more times, four altogether.  Some catchy stuff, but overall I can't get into it.  Kevin's style of singing (at least I'm assuming it's him) is just way too monotone and uninteresting.  Chroma Key was the same for me.  It sounds like he's singing through a three-dollar piece of shit microphone, with no emotion at all.  I realize that that's the sound he's going for, since it completely permeates all his work, but it completely fails to click with me.

All files deleted.

I really hope iTunes will have it midnight unlike the total letdown last night involving the new Linkin Park single.  If all goes well, I should have the new album in my possession in less than 5 hours.

Just finished listening to Terminal, now on False Start.  I'd have to say except for like the first minute of Terminal, this album is really well-paced so far.
