Metalcore, Deathcore, etc Thread
« on: September 23, 2009, 08:08:06 PM »
ITT, we discuss the good "core" bands out there (Metalcore, Deathcore, Math, Grind, etc). Despite being a usually overlooked genre type, theres definately a lot of talent and emotion in some of the bands belonging to these genres. So I'll start off and list some of my favorites.

Protest The Hero (Metal/Mathcore)- A generally liked band on this forum, they have some of the most daredevilish and technical music in the genre, and yet offer very catchy songs, despite a lot of their songs missing a chorus. From the extremely talented vocalist (An acquired taste perhaps, but definately talented) to the ever-changing time signatures from the drummer, this band has definately got a big future ahead of em...well, as big as 'core' groups get :P

Favorite Songs: Bloodmeat, Sequia Throne

Sequoia Throne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypCdGNe3Bvs (This song got me into them)

Between the Buried and Me (Progressive Metalcore)- Also one of the more popular bands among this forum, BTBAM is no doubt one of the most talented, bombastic, and 'progressive' bands this decade. They can go from brutal and pounding to soft and lighthearted in a matter of seconds without feeling too "jumpy". Throughout their somewhat short career, they have made significant progressions with each album, eventually culminating in the ever popular Colors.

Favorite Songs: Sun of Nothing, White Walls

White Walls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApNSnzQciTQ

The Human Abstract(Metal/Mathcore)- A very talented and young band, THA had became one of my favorites from the first time I heard them. Some of the melodies that they make in their songs just blow my mind sometimes, and their style is pretty unique among others. Although their latest album takes a less "math-like" approach, it continues to see a certain evolution of the band into an even more melody based style.

Favorite Songs: Vela, Together we Await the Storm, Breathing Life into Devices

Vela, Together we Await the Storm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u9KDMWJsAM

All Shall Perish (Deathcore)- Deathcore doesnt really get much respect...anywhere. Usually seen as one of the lowest forms of metal/hardcore music, many of the bands share the same sound wherever they go without much growth. However, ASP is definately not in that category. Extreme talent is evident in this band, from the mind-blowing drummer to the brutal riffs of the guitar. While most Deathcore bands really on breakdowns to carry their music, ASP's sheer technicality and emotion can carry them for miles. Now, there are breakdowns in the music, but they do not make the music.

Favorite Songs: Wage Slaves, The True Beast

The True Beast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw-z1s6eD34

Other Notable Mentions (That I didnt feel like typing out stuff for)

Born of Osiris
The Acacia Strain
Emmure (first album only)
Obscura

I'm a huge fan of BTBAM. Below is band names in italics and notable songs in paratheses.

I'm also a big fan of August Burns Red (Composure, Back Burner), Miss May I (A Dance With Aera Cura, Architect), and Bring Me The Horizon (Pray For Plagues, Diamonds Aren't Forever).

The first two can be good listens but the third is definitely an acquired taste.

I'm glad someone else likes The Human Abstract... I haven't heard of anyone else that likes them or has even heard of them, besides me. They really are a talented band. Also, my favorite song is Breathing Life into Devices as well  ;)

Ugh, I have a feeling this thread is going to derail into a shit fight.

Until then, I'll throw out a list:

After the Burial
All That Remains
As I Lay Dying
August Burns Red
BTBAM (although I don't consider them to be metalcore, for reasons I won't argue here)
Bullet For My Valentine
Darkest Hour
The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Faceless
Misery Signals
Protest the Hero
Shadows Fall (old stuff)
SikTh
Still Remains
Unearth

Huge fan of Suicide Silence  :metal Mitch Lucker is an amazing vocalist and they put on an amazing live show. Also love As Blood Runs Black, they have a sick as hell drummer. August Burns Red = Masters of breakdowns. Carnifex is an amazing fucking band, love there guitar sound and there vocalist. Knights of the Abyss were amazing on Juggernaut. I too love Protest The Hero, the vocalist took a bit of getting used to at first, but I love him now. Through the Eyes of the Dead is an amazing band, I love there drummer and his orgasmic double bass patterns. And last but not least, Whitechapel. Love love love love love Phil Bozeman.

^ I don't listen to Suicide Silence that much but once in a while makes the listen amazing and August Burns Red is my favorite true metalcore band (since i don't consider BTBAM metalcore...).

Deadlock: Kind of more melodic than metalcore, but it's definitely got metalcore influences. They incorporate good electronic and techno sections too

Favourite songs: Martyr to Science, We Shall All Bleed

The Black Dahlia Murder: best deathcore band (imo). The vocalist and drummer are just pure awesome!

favourite songs: Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants, Black Bubblegum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqXVBeEuwLU

I can't get into TBDM. I've heard great things about them from band members, ex band members and friends whoms musical taste I generally agree with. But, I just don't hear it. I've tried, very hard too. Maybe someday I'll get them.

I greatly enjoy Protest the Hero, am trying to get into The Human Abstact and BtBaM, and just can't get into the really "death"-y stuff like Suicide Silence. I saw them in concert with Static-X, Black Label Society, and Bury Your Dead, and I just couldn't get into SS.

Try Black Valor off their new record, it's pretty cool. Other than that just keep trying, took me a while to get into them, I'm glad I didn't get Miasma first or else I wouldn't have gotten into them at all.

Where's the Nintendocore love??

HORSE the Band - Pretty much THE band for Nintendocore.  Recommended if you enjoy Metal mixed with Nintendo (obviously) and Pizza.  Check out "A Natural Death" and "R. Borlax".  Favourite Tracks: "Cutman", "Lord Gold Throneroom", "Murder" and "New York City"

iwrestledabearonce - Sorta Mathcore/Avant Garde Metal with some Nintendocore influences.  Kinda similar to HORSE the Band.  Check out the debut album "Its All Happening".  Favourite Tracks:  "You Ain't No Family", "Tastes Like Kevin Bacon"

Honourable mentions go to Sky Eats Airplane and I AM ERROR.

Mean.

Anyone into the whole "hardcore with electronic elements" trend?

TBH, I love listening to these bands and while many aren't serious, they're a lot of fun to listen too and the mix of hardcore and electronic music makes it even better. Bands I'd recommend are:

Asking Alexandria
I See Stars
We Came as Romans

Oh, and bump :P

Strong thread resurrection.

I've heard a few of the hardcore/electronic mixed bands.  Most of what I heard were garbage, which is a shame, because there is some really strong potential for good music in that area.

Listening to We Came As Romans now.  I like the subtle use of electronic stuff.  The overall music is kind of meh though.  I've gotten really sick of modern chugga chugga bands; they dominate the scene now, and most of them can't play for shit.

I'll check out these other bands too.
