Hi!

I got into NIN about three months ago. My bandwagon news has been off since high school, but thank god I got on this one.

My old roommate in college told me that if I ever find The Fragile for less than $20, I should grab it. Well, I got it for $14.
Best goddamn money I ever spent on a whim. There is nothing better than realizing a man's grasp on his depression and drug abuse could sound so beautiful. The concept itself is breathtaking and worth the journey.

Then I stole my brother's With Teeth...well, not actually steal per say but more like exchange-ownership-to-someone-who-actually-appreciates-music-and-not-some-ill-conceived-notion-that-Trent-Reznor-is-some-depressed-addict-to-admire-and-put-on-a-pedestal-simply-cause-he-does-drugs. It was different, but still fantastic.

And then there was Pretty Hate Machine... :metal

I have yet to get these:

Broken
The Downward Spiral
Year Zero
Ghosts (I-IV)
The Slip

Sugestions?

probably try YZ next, as WT and PHM have prepared you fairly well for it.

maybe then use The Slip as a transition into the more br00tal Broken/TDS combo.

i'd say save Ghosts for last, but i think that's my personal bias — i only really like Ghosts IV, and can leave the rest. (it's also the most Fragiley part of the two-disc affair, though much of the album smacks of TF.)

I would recommend Broken and Downward Spiral.

Also make sure to get Dead Souls off of the Crow Soundtrack. I love that song and its what got me into NIN in the first place.

And on a side note The Fragile is my favorite  :heart

As I sit here and listen to March of the Pigs, it reminds me of the first time I saw the video.

Back in the day, my young mind was blown, especially when it gets to the "doesn't it make you feel better" part and the microphone just drops. Absolutely brilliant video.

I think i'll take this route. This one friend from high school told me all about Ghosts and he sold it as a possible soundtrack score. I think just to be difficult I will leave The Downward Spiral for last.  :coolio

Cool interview.  Mainly focuses on his soundtrack career, though it also delves into his background a bit.

It depends on what albums you like the most. Pretty Hate Machine in my mind is a rare breed, in that its sound is really more beat driven than the other albums. Broken and The Downward Spiral are very heavy albums, heavier than The Fragile. I thought With Teeth was pretty good but most of the remixes of the songs are better than the original. Year Zero is pretty good too and The Slip is okay. For me, The Fragile his is best album.

I got interested in industrial music so I was advised to check NIN out as the acclaimed kings of the genre. I gotta say the stuff I found upon my youtube search bored the living fuck out of me. I'm getting to realize there's quite a difference between industrial music and heavy industrial music. NIN set a mood but get no where with it. They left the same impression on my as Tool, different as they are.
Anyone have any NIN recommendations that doesn't sound like the background music in a SAW movie?

You sound a little too pre-opinionated but I'll bite. A few choice cuts:

"Reptile" (The Downward Spiral)

"Slipping Away" (Things Falling Apart)

"Last" (Broken)

If any industrial outside of industrial metal bores you, you probably won't like NIN, even though I don't think it should matter how industrial a band is.

Thanks a lot for the links guys, I'm giving them all a few listens.

If any industrial outside of industrial metal bores you, you probably won't like NIN, even though I don't think it should matter how industrial a band is.

Looks that way to me now. I mistakenly thought all industrial music is techno with heavy distorted guitars riffs and generally head banging energy.

What songs did you listen to that sounded like background music

I don't remember the titles but it mostly reminded me of really good musical scores from Silent Hill (like this https://youtu.be/80a-DF6o46o) which is great yet can't keep my attention to it as primary subject.

It's a common misconception. The bands that started industrial back in the 80s didn't incorporate guitars whatsoever, or if they did, it was very sparingly. My favorite sub-genre of industrial music relies on synthesizers, not guitars.
