Wasn't terribly stuffed with the Iris Divine release, but this scratched what was itchin me.

Iris Divine - Mercurial

This was a nice surprise - came out today and I had no idea until yesterday. I had really liked their previous, The Static and the Noise, with that sound at the intersection of prog metal, King's X-esque sense of groove and melody, and some alternative metal.

I'm enjoying this one a ton. Only one listen, but it sounds like they upped both the modern groove and the proggy, melodic stuff. At times they really let loose, power-trio style, and it's a joy. The first two songs are bit on the "modern" side, and just warming things up (although the chorus in Silver Tongued Lie is great). The third song, Thirteen, is fantastic. There's also a cool instrumental - Death by Consensus - that has some great riffing before suddenly opening up to a breezy, almost AOR-sounding melodic middle section.

Good stuff. I'll be revisiting, for sure...

I have no idea how I didn't see this, on my first listen right now. Thirteen is an awesome 7 min track.

My impression on first listen is that this may actually be my favorite album of theirs. I like how varied it is from their usual crunchy riff type tracks.
A lot of tracks have great instrumental breaks, some nice solos thrown here and there. Only complaint is that the fadeouts are way too early in the tracks. I feel like they should have extended those tracks. Just when it was getting going it fades away.

Evergrey - A Heartless Portrait

Endeverafter - Kiss Or Kill

I listened to A Heartless Portrait only once and the first impression is another very solid Evergrey album. I suspect it will get even better in time, as did The Atlantic and Escape of the Phoenix...

I remember the Endeverafter album being very cool...it's been a while, I might dig it back up.

Travelling, but sampled four albums last night and trying to revisit each a bit tonight.

I think this could be a huge grower. Gave this a full second listen tonight. It's not right in my wheelhouse but I'm digging it.

So this is quality stuff, but it has an ears-glaze-over quality to it. I want to hear some more, but at the same time, I feel like I already know what I'm going to hear.

This is pretty chill. I kind of dig it. I'd have to be in the mood for this, but it's a quality listen.

Described as melodic black metal?? Yeah, I guess. Fairly enjoyable 5 track EP.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

This first three album of Enigma changed my life. As I get older I tend to listen thematic new age music more. And Enigma is the best project in that genre, imo.

Yeah, played the Endeverafter on a whim having not played it in years. It’s pretty good.

The Evergrey is very good. They are rarely anything else.

Queensryche- Empire

MSG - Save Yourself

James LaBrie - Beautiful Shade Of Grey

Turbulence - Frontal - excellent prog metal. YouTube algorithm working for once

The production really cuts the nuts off of Delirious Nomad. You should check the live versions of Nervous Nan and Long Before I Die on Saints Will Conquer.
When they let that opening note of Nervous Man hang there…. :metal

Aftermath is my #2 Armored Saint track.

Will do.

AS’s first 3 albums were re-released on CD this year so I blind-bought them. Based on the first 2 the band could become a favorite. Of course I’ve heard Symbol of Salvation… but I don’t remember anything about it so I’ll give it a relisten for sure.

I'm seriously surprised you've not heard Cave In, I imagine them being a band you'd like. I haven't given this a second spin yet but I could easily see it being a top 10 contender.

Just went under my radar I guess. :lol I don't listen to much metalcore, which their earlier stuff seems to be. But this is pretty much just Baroness-esque sludge metal, except heavier. I'm liking it so far, though the clean vocals are definitely the weakest element.

Despite the looks, this is not a black metal album by any means :lol. It's more of uhhhh psychedelic rock / pop? With heavy and crazy guitars. Some tracks border on thrash, others have a bit of hip hop - it's such a fun mix.

Currently spinning this as well. It just continues to grow and I still haven't lost interest in The Dripping Tap. Seriously might end up being my album of the year, well until the new Coheed album drops anyway.

Fate Breaks Dawn - Deviate

I have pimped this once before, but I think it might be worth doing it again  ;D

Released in 2018, this one has riffs, riffs and more riffs! I don't know much about the band, but this is US metal with plenty of thrashy attitude. Vocals are a mix of harsh (but not too harsh) and cleans. Some of the vocal melodies, especially in the choruses, have a bit of a Witherfall vibe, but the songs are overall more aggressive and straightforward.

The opener In Darkness is a great sample of their sound (again, those riffs!).

They don't seem to be on streaming services, but the album is on Bandcamp:

Catching up to some of this year's releases: new Kendrick is alright, better than DAMN, but nowhere close to TPAB. Mother I Sober is an excellent track though, (and it features Beth Gibbons from Portishead!).

Listening to the new Gospel, feels surreal to think they've reunited and released something new. Pretty cool so far, it's like post-hardcore mixed with uuhhh prog? And a very prominent organ sound. Quite intense and atmospheric.

The Smile is basically Radiohead, kind of a continuation of the sound of their last album. I will revisit it.

New Tears for Fears is surprisingly decent. Nothing groundbreaking, but some good boomer pop songs here.

yeah kendrick was alright but there's some. questionable decisions & only a few tracks really stood out. new gospel rules tho. and didn't care for the smile at all but i've never been wild for radiohead and "radiohead, but less good" isn't super appealing :lol
