A Beginners Guide to Vines
« on: September 09, 2009, 08:48:22 PM »
Okay, seeing as some vines are starting up I want to address some general questions about how they work.

Basically a vine is when someone sends shows out, and those shows then continue down a list of posters who have signed up for the shows.

So here are the quick points.
-Pay attention to sign up requirements and possible geographic splits, and always sign up/update the very latest version of the list.
-When you sign up, send your address to the person above you on the list.
-Always send on the original discs you received, never the copies you made.
-Make a good effort to send the discs out 2-4 business days after you receive them.

And now here is the long version.

So, lets say Poster A offers up certain shows for a vine. Then Poster B decides he wants the shows, he will post the following.

Poster A
1. Poster B

Then poster C decides he wants the shows, and so will post the following-

Poster A
1. Poster B
2. Poster C

Now, at this point lets say that Poster A sends out the discs to Poster B, he will update as following.

Poster A - OUT 09/10
1. Poster B
2. Poster C

Note that Poster A updated the most recent list in the thread, this is always the case. So now if three more people sign up, the list will look like the following-

Poster A - OUT 09/10
1. Poster B
2. Poster C
3. Poster D
4. Poster E
5. Poster F

And following the same logic, when Poster B receives the discs he will update as follows-

Poster A - OUT 09/10
1. Poster B - IN 09/13
2. Poster C
3. Poster D
4. Poster E
5. Poster F

And then when he sends back out-
Poster A - OUT 09/10
1. Poster B - IN 09/13 - OUT 9/15
2. Poster C
3. Poster D
4. Poster E
5. Poster F

Now, at this point we ask, how are these discs going around? Whenever you sign up for a vine you send your address to the person before you. This assures that once that person receives the discs, he does not have to message you and wait for an address, he will already have it. So when Poster B was the first to sign up he will send his address to Poster A. When Poster C signs up he will send his address to Poster B, etc.

Now another important thing to note is that you should always send along the ORIGINAL copies of the show(s). When you receive discs you can burn a new copy for yourself or transfer the data to your hard-drive but whatever you do do not send copies to the next person. The original discs always move on.

Also, many posters may split a vine into geographic area. They may specify that they want a North American branch and a Rest of the World branch. If that is the case two separate lists will run in the same thread, and you should put yourself on the correct list depending on your location. Finally, some posters may have requirements for signing up for a vine, personally I generally require 50 or more posts on the forum to sign up for a vine. Make sure you meet any requirements before signing up.

Failure to send discs out after receiving them can result in a ban from this forum, signing up for a vine means you agree to send the discs out to the next person on the list. Generally it is proper to send discs out 2-4 business days after you receive them, but delays do occur and sometimes it can't be done, however you should make a reasonable attempt to get discs in the mail in a short time after you receive them. Usually, if you are the last person on the list, and the vine has been closed to new people, you may keep the discs, but sometimes the vine starter will request the last person send the discs back to them, in which case you will do so.
