That's Roie Avin, who runs the excellent Prog Report site with connected podcast, and who wrote this great book about modern prog: https://progreport.com/product/essential-modern-progressive-rock-albums/. He is also a frequent contributer to the Prog magazine, and works with InsideOut a lot.

Forgive me if it's been answered, but does anyone know who the interviewer is and what is his relationship to the band?

I believe he is John Petrucci's father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Great videos and questions.

Is it me or does mike look like Danny DaVito with a wig sitting in that chair?

Well, I can tell you from experience that he's pretty short.  So yeah.

Yeah, he's about a couple inches taller than me. Or maybe one, haha. I'm pretty short as well.

I thought very seriously about just putting him in my pocket and taking him home with me.

Mangini seems happier than I last saw him in an interview, hopefully his writing on this album made him feel more fulfilled and more integral to the band. Cause I really want him to stay with DT.

Yeah Mike is fairly short. I was actually quite surprised that Jordan is on the short side as well when I met them - I always pictured him as quite tall for some reason.

Agreed, I am 180cm, which is just below average and I always though that JLB is a tall guy, but he's actually shorter than me when I met him. I'm actually taller than all of DT...

James was also a very nice and cool guy. (not that this has anything to do with the topic but I wanted to add it)

That might be average to you, but here you’d be considered a very tall guy :lol

Wikipedia says 180 is above average everywhere but ex-Viking areas, parts of the Baltics, parts of the Balkan peninsula and a few Germanic countries, and when you consider that men like to lie about their height and always add a few cm, that's not average at all

Unless I'm doing the conversion wrong, 180 cm is slightly less than 5 feet 11 inches.  Where the heck is 5' 11" "below average"?!

Just for reference, I am 6'2, or 188cm. I Honestly thought JLB and JP were taller before meeting them.

Just googled, average height for men in Germany is 178 cm. So I’m not below average, I’m slightly above ;)

How about now? Who's conducting the interview now?

As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

For guys that are so technically savvy and intense about their gear and their craft, their videos really seem to be produced by noobs, and it's always been this way.

They try, sure, but when I look back there always seems to be issues, even with major releases like home videos (SFaM layer-switch glitch) and CDs (JP's "Curve" track splite) or just general delays in production due to "issues" (Luna Park), but it's definitely whenever they try and do web-ish videos that they blow it.

The audio is usually bad and I most point to that whole thing that JP and JR did about writing parts of The Astonishing where they sound like they're doing the videos in a bathtub.

Agreed... why not producing and cutting the interviews like they did the interviews in the drummers documentation? The black/white ones? Those looked cool. I bet a thumbnail with an image like that would be clicked on more on YouTube, compared to a video of the whole band filmed in front of windows (who films towards light anyway???). AND we could hear those 6 words JMX said!  ;)

Cool interview. There is a comment to part 1 comparing John Myung to Hector Salamanca. So fucking funny I nearly rolled off the couch laughing.
