All of the "there would be no y without x" arguments fall flat with me.

We would have no progressive rock albums whatsoever without Sgt Pepper (or In the Court of the Crimson King, if you prefer).  Just because something came first doesn't give *anything* an automatic at being better.   EDIT - IF "first" equaled "best" we may as well just all go home and say that ITCOTCK is the greatest prog rock album ever made....but most of us don't feel that way...even though we acknowledge it as a masterpiece and an important stepping stone in the process.

Music moves forward.  People hear something, tweak the idea, sometimes they make it even better than it was before, and then they influence the next thing.   Etc...etc...etc...

This your post gives me an idea to start a new poll: Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden.

I acknowledge CttE as a masterpiece of the genre.   But Hemispheres is literally the most perfect album ever made.   Until I heard Supper's Ready, Cygnus X-1 (books 1 & 2 together) made up the single greatest piece of music ever written by anyone ever.   And it is still my #2 behind SR.

Except that Cygnus X-1 and Hemisphere is not a single piece of music, but please keep mislabeling it that way. :p :lol

I chose Hemispheres, even though CTTE is just as good. So it was kind of a flip of the coin kind of choice for me.  I agree with jammindude about the production of Hemispheres sounding better, but that doesn't make it a better song. Or maybe it does, I don't know, I'm so confused!  :justjen

I really loathe the sound on those classic Yes records.   Relayer is the worst (sound wise)....everything just sounds so “tinny” and it just puts an unbearable “screech” on Howe’s already “jangly” guitar sound.

If we are talking about sound, they also ruined the vocals, I mean, they sound all whiny and annoying :D (On a serious note, you articulated that very well).

Hemispheres by a country mile.

I like the sound of Hemispheres - it sounds warmer and more organic than A Farewell to Kings - but there is a lot of hiss.  Crank up the beginning of either The Trees or La Villa Strangiato and you'll hear a lot of hiss (and it was way worse originally).

Without a doubt, Hemispheres. I respect Yes and appreciate some of their music and their contributions in general, but they've never even made my top 10 favorite bands. Rush was numero uno for me many years, and still is a close second. Nevermind that Hemispheres one of my 3 favorite albums from Rush.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Hemispheres vs Relayer would be a much better match.

You mean a much easier win for Hemispheres.  As great as Gates of Delirium is, side 2 of Relayer can't hold a candle to side 2 of Hemispheres.

Cygnus X-1 and Hemisphere is not a single piece of music

Concur.

I think I have something controversial to say about this.

As good as those classic Yes albums are....Eddie Offord should have been shot.   I really loathe the sound on those classic Yes records.   Relayer is the worst (sound wise)....everything just sounds so “tinny” and it just puts an unbearable “screech” on Howe’s already “jangly” guitar sound.

I don”t even know if that makes any sense.   I mean, I *LOVE* the music, but the sound on those albums is really dated, and quite frankly, awful.

I won't go nearly this far, but I get where you're going with this.  I do, however, think Relayer and CttE are vastly different in this regard.

Agreed.  I think Relayer could have been Yes' best album had Side 2 been better (and I like To Be Over quite a bit, and enjoy Sound Chaser even though it is a mess).

I probably like Gates of Delirium a little more than the song Hemispheres.

What Hemisphere are you from?   All joking aside, I'm glad to see this poll pretty much tied at this point. It was a tough choice for me.

Why this one specifically? What about your 50 other polls? I'm so confused.

1. It's 29-29, not 69-69.

2. The tie doesn't need to be broken. It's not like the poll serves any significant purpose.

In for the tie at 30

I've never been a fan of the Cygnus songs so that brings it down for me. The other 3 songs in the album are good, great, majestic.

Close to the edge is awesome from start to finish. The 3 songs are just brilliant in their own way, CttE being a magnificent prog epic, And You and I being so full of emotion and  Siberian Khatru is prog made fun and awesome.

Close to the Edge gets the vote

Well, Hemispheres is a top ten album all time for me, and CTTE is not (as good as Siberian Khatru is, it's not at the level of "And You And I", which is legendary).

I love Yes more than Rush, but Hemispheres more than Close to the Edge.

Tie breaker is The Trees, the most brutally honest political tune ever written in my opinion.

Haha, I like the allegory of The Trees as well, but as far as "brutally honest political tunes", uh, Neil Young just called.

Sir, you are right. Hyperbole got the best of me.

Just insert "sung" between "brutally" and "honest" and I completely agree.
